SOLVED Need some advice about visiting Stanage Edge please

We were planning to visit Stanage Edge, near Sheffield, tomorrow but now my frail mother in law is coming with us. Obviously we don't want to abandon her there, so are the rock formations visible from a car park or somewhere we can stop the car? If not I will have to re-plan our itinerary. I'm sure she would love to see it of course.

I was then planning to drive down to Crich Tramway Village. If anyone can think of some alternative sightseeing not too far from Sheffield (where my daughter is at Uni) I'm all ears!

My daughter went to Sheffield Uni. (Law). I went to the museum when I visited her and found it very interesting. There is also a gardens with conservatory which she may like.

Peak District:

Winnats Pass (dramatic)
Castleton (very pretty) and the local caves.
Mam Tor (good views, easy parking and steps to the top).
Derwent Valley (with an interesting history of it's dam building.
Eyam (the plague village)

Google Maps with Street View can be your friend. I recommend you check the places you're interested in from that as Stanage Edge just looks like an edge from the car park, as far as I can see.

Hopefully you can take your mother in law somewhere worthwhile with interesting views from the car.

Getting a car close to the good bits of Stanage isn't easy. There is a car park at Burbage that may be worth a look. There are 2 roads from Burbage to nearby Hathersage, the one called The Dale skirts beneath that end of Stanage Edge (Millstone) and has several layby car parking areas, if they are full then the minor road that leads off The Dale has a car park called Plantation (the one Ross has found).

Castleton and Edale in the upper Hope Valley are sweet spots for scenery. The Old Nags Head in Edale is a suitable pub to abandon the frail and head off to find a photo.

Ian Jim's list is a good one and Chatsworth is a great addition. I like Crich museum too so you've got quite a good selection there. I think there are a few fairs on in the evenings too which would be good for night shots. Belper is on sometime soon and I think Ilkeston may be on too. The Derwent Dam has a Danbusters museum and Ladybower reservoir is next to it too and quite close to Sheffield. Sorry I'm on the south coast at the moment otherwise I could have looked up more places for you as I have several guide books at home.

Yes there are some car parks below Stanage Edge - from which it can easily be seen.

The car park at Overstones will give you the best view NW along the edge towards High Neb and there is a relatively easy path (for you but not your Mother in law from there up on to the Edge near Robin Hoods Cave - which has some photogenic rocks.

Here is a screengrab of the OS 25K for that area. (Overstones Farm CP is the righthand (most easterly of the 3 CP shown).

You might even spot Birley Farm - which should make you feel at home :-)
This screenshot of the corresponding 50K map gives you more context.
The road west out of Sheffield to Ringlinglow will take you directly to your target.

The CP at Burbage Rocks - on the road from Ringlinglow - gives you a view of Burbage Edge (somewhat smaller than Stanage) and if you are returning to Sheffield from Hathersage on the A6187 it's worth stopping off at the Millstone Edge CP and walking back to the viewpoint.

I would echo the advice from Gwyver and add it may be worth considering parking near Higger Tor and taking the short walk to there for the view over the Burbage valley and the over Carls Wark towards Chatsworth. Also the drive up to the High Neb end of Stanage from Bamford gives excellent views over the Hope Valley, if you can ignore the cement works!

If you have a Blue Badge for your mother in law it would be well worth the drive along the Derwent/Howden reservoir chain to Kings Tree at the end, if the sun is out the colours can be stunning. It is only accessible by a regular bus or disabled access at weekends
