  • I have a photo in our local newspaper.

I am pleased to have one of my photos in our local Blue Mountains Gazette of the Ex Gratia Choir (photo taken Oct 2015 at the Mountain Heritage looking east overlooking Jamison Valley in the distance to the south east) for their upcoming concert (important to me because I have a daughter singing in it then & now).
    On page 29. http://magresources.f2.com.au/bmg/files/28.html

This is how they cropped it for the paper (text thumbnail below).

The text as it appeared in the paper (click on thumbnail to see it).

Cropped from this one I gave them.

It was challenging afternoon sunlight so I edited the (raw) photo in Capture One to get this result.

This is one on many I took inside during the concert last year using my 14-54 II lens & close ups with my 50-200 SWD lens of soloists & closer views etc.

    Well done, Ross.

Your uncropped pic looks fab Ross. Unfortunately newspaper photo editors are forever conscious of space. Congratulations for having it published and to your daughter for being in the choir.

Re: I have a photo in our local newspaper.

You were correct to take the uncropped photo as you could not know the shape of the hole that was to be filled or indeed any text overlay that may make (always a problem with cover photos). Anyway, it gives the editor something to do. The cropped photo does have a bit more appeal as it is all about the group and no distracting scenary. The last one's a worthy shot as well.

Ross, I've just revisited this page (my initial response was from bed on my idiot phone).

I do think the newspaper crop is good, nothing is lost and more focus upon the group.

I would also appear that they've made a selective levels adjustment below the sky, also good.

          Your original is also excellent.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments. I should point out that I gave the photos to the choir (although I'm sure I asked that they credit the photographer; me). I did do some 'letterbox' crops but this is probably the best to show the important part of the photo, the choir members, so I guess the choir passed on the full image & the newspaper did the crop. They (conductor) hadn't really looked through all the photos until recently because of busy circumstances & realised how good they were so they asked if I could take photos again (through my daughter) & I will be, but I will make it more clear they acknowledge, credit the photographer for any photos used.

              Excellent photos and congratulations.

A suggestion for future shots, would it have been an even better photo if you'd moved the tables out of the way? - It's the sort of thing I miss during a shoot and kick myself for afterwards!

Oh yes, it would have been a better idea, but I just jumped in to take the shots on that occasion not being fully prepared for that location as someone else was taking photos & I wasn't sure if I could (be allowed to) just prior to that point. I had one camera & two lenses for indoors, but this time (this weekend, being asked to do it) I will have two cameras & a suitable flash (FL50R) to fill in the shadows better to compete with that afternoon sun (if that should be the same location again). It will only be house lighting inside though.

Those tables look quite heavy to me, plus it is always difficult keeping everyone together whilst you rearrange the furniture.

Fill in flash would definitely have been an advantage in that harsh sunlight, but again, time and circumstances don't always allow these things.

Congratulations all round though. They are very nice photos and it is always good to see a strong choir.

                  What will they be singing?

As it turned out some tables & chairs had been moved, but obviously not all out of the way. I'll be prepared with a flash but my guess is they will think up something different this time & I will have to 'play it by ear' anyhow.

For the programme, my daughter tells me a whole eclectic range of music will be included for the night. This is the title theme,
