Re: Be Careful Where You Park Your Car!
That seems to be happening a lot these days. One of the most impressive examples for me happened in Norwich in 1988 when a double decker bus fell into a hole in Earlham Road, due to medieval chalk mining works suddenly collapsing. Cadbury's immediately realised the potential of the striking image and the next day started an advertising campaign for their Double Decker chocolate bar with the strapline 'nothing fills a hole like a Double Decker'. Clever stuff.

Re: Be Careful Where You Park Your Car!
We have mine workings and other excavations dating back hundreds of years. Many of these old working were abandoned long before such excavations were recorded. And the fact is that many older roads and buildings were built without any knowledge of what was under the ground.
A few years ago a similar hole appeared in a field just beyond the runway of Newcastle airport. I think that turned out to be an old mine working.
Many of the problems in the home counties seem to be related to limestone dissolving deep underground; presumably accelerated by acidic rainfall over the past 100 years or so.---------------

Re: Be Careful Where You Park Your Car!
Nigel beat me to it. A friend of mine in a local village - West Rainton - had a crack running along the line of the building and the path. He used two sets of chinney sweeps rods to find out how deep and was surprised when he ran out of rods before reaching bottom. Once again, it was down to old mine workings. Once this was determined, the houses in question were evacuated.
These day's you have to be 'fracking' careful where you build as well as park your car. If a certain industry gets its way there could be houses disappearing. It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

We mustn't stand in the way of big oil Wally. That just wouldn't do.Originally posted by Wally View PostThese day's you have to be 'fracking' careful where you build as well as park your car. If a certain industry gets its way there could be houses disappearing.

Yes; and I believe the chalk extends to High Wycombe and beyond, where a very large sink hole developed last year.Originally posted by Harold Gough View PostLooks like a suspension problem!
Reading has various old chalk workings. There is an extensive system under the local scout hut which has a Nissen hut inside it.

Re: Be Careful Where You Park Your Car!
Googling for it shows there have been rather a lot.
One in High Wycombe, Feb 2014:
Family describe shock at large hole in driveway, and daughter's screams at realising her car was at the bottom of it
The one I remember from last year was not that far from Wycombe, in St. Albans:
A massive sinkhole opens up on a street in St Albans, forcing the evacuation of several families during the night.
I remember that one because it was about 100 yards from where a friend used to live.
And there seems to have been a whole series of them in Hemel Hempstead - I hope (Ian and his hire stock) are not in danger of being swallowed up!
As Harold says, there are various old workings under Reading. There was a story a few years ago about a street near the town centre that had to be evacuated after an underground chamber collapsed. It looks as if we are living on top of a sponge.

I posted them to PO Box 14, HP2 7EH last year, but I have not seen them since.

By coincidence, I bought a local paper this morning. It has an article about the caves under the scout hut. Some of the chambers are up to 20ft deep.Originally posted by Harold Gough View PostLooks like a suspension problem!

I seems that Churchill's Secret Army were based there, their mission to blow up the two bridges across the Thames, to stop the advance of certain unwelcome European visitors.

It seems the Army took Reading and the surrounding area very seriously during WWII. I'm not sure why? Maybe it had something to do with local industry?Originally posted by Harold Gough View PostBy coincidence, I bought a local paper this morning. It has an article about the caves under the scout hut. My mother, prior to my arrival, worked in the ammunition factory at Burghfield, about 10m south of Reading. Of course, there was Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory and the Simonds brewery.Originally posted by Naughty Nigel View PostIt seems the Army took Reading and the surrounding area very seriously during WWII. Some attitudes never seem to change. I find it QI, that from the 17th Century, The Hokey-Cokey dance is still going on.

I'm glad the Army had their priorities right.Originally posted by Harold Gough View PostOf course, there was Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory and the Simonds brewery.

There was also a brewery in Henley on Thames (Brakspear's ?) which I believe is still there.---------------
