It was Morrisons' what started it. A pack of large bangers with the label 'Outdoor Bred Pork Sausages'.

Well, what to make of that ? Did Morrisons really have 'Sausage Farms' spread round our green and glorious land ?

If they did, why had I not seen some of these exotic creatures, free range sausages, roaming the fields here in Lincolnshire ? They would naturally go with all the vegetables grown locally.

But wait, there is more ! On the shelf at Sainsbury's today were a few packs of 'Outdoor Bred Pork Chipolatas'. Long pink skinny things. Are they offspring of the 'Outdoor Bred Pork Sausages' ?

Please, someone, lets see a picture here soon.

On a dark night you can see clusters of wild sausages in the mean lanes of Watford. At least I think they're sausages.

Yes. On a dark night you don't see them - just stand on them!

I am not exactly telling porkies, although this thread is a bit tongue in cheek.

Where do these advertising blokes get their ideas from ? At least it gave me food for thought (with some mashed spuds and gravy).

I like the humour in this thread already - although I must confess to misunderstanding Stephen's "clusters of wild sausages in the lanes of Watford on a dark night". There are certain car parks to avoid in the Portsmouth area at night where clusters of wild sausages are on display............. and not the sort you tread on!

However, back on topic, Bangers and mash and onion gravy - comfort food indeed.

Perhaps the release of wild boar sossies may drive out our native variety.

But back (again) to the original post, and the intended way the customer was to understand the description. It says that the pork is "outdoor bred" meaning that the pigs have had a wonderful carefree outdoor life, no? Positively bucolic, eh?

I suspect not. I suspect that the only outdoor aspect of the pigs' life was the breeding, perhaps even only the literal part of it. (Isn't that dogging not pigging?).

Is there a legal definition of "Outdoor bred"?

A lot of these descriptions are tenuous. When we lived in Scotland there was a large egg farm on the estate. Free range, the eggs were described as. The trouble is, no-one had told the hens. Even though they could get out, you simply couldn't persuade the birds to leave the sheds.
