  • A shutter-bug friendly package holiday provider?

So, for the past two years, I've been having a late, winter sun break, in Lanzarote. I'm quite addicted to this island's volcanic landscapes, and the warmth, and the cleanness of the air, seem to provide a real health kick. For the last two years, I've been going with Thomas Cook. They've been nice enough, but the hand baggage allowance is a paltry 5kg.

For some of you (especially those still shooting with the E-3/5, and with SHG lenses), I can imagine 5kg might be just a little bit of a struggle.

As luck would have it, neither Thomas Cook or Thomson is showing the hotel I wanted, this year, so I thought I'd give Jet2 Holidays a try. Not only is their checked in baggage allowance more generous (22kg), but their hand baggage allowance is 10kg. In my light rucksack, that would mean a couple of the little Pen bags, E-P5, E-PM2, some lenses, iPad and, crucially, my MacBook Air!

At the moment, I'm at the stage of having handed Jet2 Holidays a wad of cash (the holiday is late November). I'll let you know how I get on.

Went to Lanzarote a couple of years ago

The volcanic fields are other worldly. I love the demo they do at the visitors centre when they pour water down a bore hole and steam shoots up a couple of seconds later and the restaurant that cooks chicken over a volcanic vent.

    Enjoy

      You could try Wizz air.
As I recall, there is no limit on cabin baggage weight, just size; selectable at booking as small, or large for a small extra fee.
If you can fit your personal stuff in the cabin bag, there will be plenty of allowance for your photo kit in the hold, as they have a limit of 32Kg for checked in baggage; but no nore than 6 suitcases mind. That should do for most folks kit, I would have thought.

Went to Madeira with Jet 2 holidays this year. First time we've done anything like a package and all I can say is that Jet 2 were brilliant. A no frills package yes but everything just as billed and lots of help when wanted without any pushy sales of trips and add-ons. They were there if we wanted them but certainly not over sold. We did try one excursion and to be honest it was so good and such good value we wished we'd done more. So maybe we didn't have much past experience to compare them with but they were so good we'll definitely be using them again.

Thanks. That gives me some confidence in my choice. The fact they're a holiday company attached to a budget airline, probably helps (and as long as it hasn't changed significantly, I know the hotel is actually very good).

The Vik San Antonio, comfortably just outside the main drag through Puerto Del Carmen.

              Edited: corrected spelling of hotel.

                Hello everyone,

Just discovered I forgot to follow up. In spite of the weather (worst in 21 years, for Lanzarote), the holiday was good and Jet2 were absolutely fine. My flight out was delayed by one day, due to high winds, and they put us all up in nice hotels (I was in a fully inclusive place, in Playa Blanca). The people on my flight certainly seemed happier than the Ryanair customers at the airport!
