Lens hoods

Hi Does anyone know where I can get a lens hood for the 12mm 50mm and the 75mm f1.8 micro lenses at reasonable pricese not ripoff prices.

The Uwinka metal hood for the 12mm is good quality, nearly but not quite as good as the genuine one for the 75mm. Which 50mm lens do you mean?

I've stuck a rubber one on, I find it better than the Uwinka one (which is the same shape as the Oly original). Personally I'm using one of the JJC ones off ebay for the 12-50mm & the 9-18mm. Less than a tenner delivered.
They only fit on the lens' bayonet forward facing, but with a bit of thought and a scalpel, they can be modified to reverse for storage. (albeit in vertical rather than horizontal format)

I'm unsure of the value of a hood on a zoom lens, apart from impact protection. They can only shade from glare at the lens' widest focal length.

Allegedly they stop some stray light coming in from the side and therefore increase contrast. But the hood also protects the lens from side impacts, important on physically longer lenses when you are clambering around things with a camera around your neck.

The rubber lens hood also has 3 position for various focal lengths.

Have you got any more details (or maybe a pic) of what's required to make it work in reverse please? I've got that same hood and would like to understand how it could be made to reverse.

It's a pretty lousy photo of the mod, but I just had to do a grab shot in available light to save offending swmbo.



Unmodified at the top, with a bit carved off the bottom one. You need to do that for all four corners; that doesn't sound right, having four corners on something round but you know what I mean.
Just modify the thinner rear ring, don't touch the front one. In retrospect, I'd have taken slightly less off circumferentially on two of the cuts and reproduced the little dimples that you can see on the front ring (out of view in this photo)
I actually used a set of vernier callipers to compare how much to take off the rear ring with respect to the front. It stows vertically rather than horizontally, but that actually suits my camera bags better.

Thanks for this. Will now think about whether having it reversible will be useful, as opposed to just leaving it in my camera bag
