Sorry to use hyperbole but we had a light dusting of snow overnight, here in Dunmow. Hard to measure it, really, but in places I think it may have formed drifts almost half a centimetre deep, driven by a stiff northerly blast of still air. Predictably, the school buses aren't running.

Up on Skye we have also had snow. It started at about 14.30 hrs yesterday and has snowed on and off since. We have an inch or two with drifts of about three
-four inches in some places.
I followed the feeder bus into Carbost this morning as it took the wee bairns the 3 miles to catch the main school bus for the 18 mile journey into Portree.
Parents stood with their much loved children giving them their fond farewells
as they prepared to get on the bus.
"Get on the bus yer nae having the day oot of the school"
and;
"Lachy if yet thrae just one moor snow bae I'll giver yer **** a skelping"
And so the wee bairns climbed on the bus plugging in their ipods and reassuring each other with tender words.
"Morag, have you got the snow over by?" or
"Calum yer big tube get yer **** oot a mae seat"
Such a tender moment shared by all.
As the bus pulled away slowly climbing the freshly gritted steep hill out of the village a lone parent expressed the emotions of them all.
"Thank Christ fer that, I though we might have had the wee buggers at home all day".
So yes fair people of Englandshire, we feel your pain.

Two Mondays ago we got up to a foot of snow, ten inches of which came down over Sunday night. We were surprised there was no school bus cancellations.
If we had that much snow we'd be paralysed for weeks!

It would help if the Porsche driver didn't pull out of the school gates into a non-existent gap and slam his 911 into a ditch blocking half of a freshly gritted, nice and clear road adding to the misery though, I must admit

That makes sense Jetset.
But I do know some folk who are clogging up the roads who do not have patients depending on them. Being late is not a sin, but the way some folk just have to get to work makes me wonder about their priorities.

On the other side of the coin I can remember from my working days the pressure put upon employees to get in, even though the nature of my business was hardly life or death. If you didn't attend you would invariably be confronted with the accusation that a colleague who lived further away managed to get in. The firm my sister works for have an even tougher policy, all absences are unpaid including sickness. In addition there is a very low threshold of absences before disciplinary action is taken.
I think it should become law that when the police instruct motorists to keep off the roads it is compulsory for all but specifically agreed exceptions.
