What happened to the good old days when telephones were used for making phone calls, letters were used for writing to people, video cameras were used for making films, and backs of hands were used for making notes?Stephen

Re: Apple vs. Samsung
I have a vague memory of microsoft being fined for non competitive practice by only letting their programs on their computers.
As I don't know a lot about this stuff I am probably wrong.
I thought apple do the same with their products

Re: Apple vs. Samsung
All this makes me wonder about so called 'patents' as previously, Apple's claims were thrown out in UK. In another country, the judge basically told both parties to Foxtrot Oscar and stop wasting court time. What's needed is a central body to oversee and keep track of all patents and the same again to deal with complaints.
Only in America could a company try to patent the word windows. Thankfully, someone had there sensible hat on and told BG to Foxtrot Oscar and stop wasting court time.
@ Ringneck... your quite correct. Which raises the question about Apple's tactics regards their grip which isn't all that far removed for which M$ got canned for doing and, in my humble opinion, goes much further than M$ ever did. It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

Re: Apple vs. Samsung
Unfortunately, some plebs in Australia have learnt to litigate like some do in the US & it's catching on more.Everything we do has to be carefully considered incase of any litigation & life can be a bit boring as structures or activities are being removed or ommited to avoid anybody sueing us.
At least our Aussie made 'Ugg' boots (sheep skin boots) won the legal challenge they had against them in the US.Ross "I fiddle with violins (when I'm not fiddling with a camera)". My Flickr

Now if Samsung win a counter claim in Japan - I'd be really surprised
Anyone watched the TV series "Suits" - sort of says it all
Bizarrely even a Korean court ruled against Samsung on related matters - although if I recall Apple also were found to be at fault.
The thing is that patents were introduced to protect small business inventors from being ripped-off by big business. But now big business are using patents to rip each other off and we're the losers. Apple's actions will increase costs for many of their competitors.
Apparently one of their patents is the action to double-tap the screen to increase the size of text in a browser. How can morally justify a 'patent' for that?
I hope Apple's reputation suffers as a result. The company is a big hypocrite - they use a whole load of technology developed by others, from the windows, mice and pointers technology originally developed by Xerox, to using core Unix technology in its latest OSs - none of this is/was patented (or adequately so) and Apple is happy to use it without having to pay any compensation. Much of what is in dispute with Samsung cost Apple pennies, metaphorically speaking, to develop. The fact is that Apple is scared of the competition, seeing their market share eroded by Samsung and Google. The next battle will be Apple versus Google - and how will that help us as customers? Maybe it will mean Apple can charge even more and make even more grotesque profits.
