I like to print my own photos for club competitions, I get a lot of pleasure producing a good print. I use Permajet papers on a Canon PRO--300 printer, results are good but I would like to produce bromide type black and white. Open to advice re other papers for a good black and white result.

I like Fotospeed papers. My favourite was Platinum Gloss, which is a bit like an unglazed gloss with a little bit of surface texture. It works very well for both colour and B&W. It was discontinued a while back, apparently one of the components of the coating is no longer available. I think the direct replacement is called Platinum Gloss Art Fibre, and it is also very good. I'm sure Permajet have equivalent papers in their range though.

I've just been printing some important work for exhibition using Permajet papers. Admittedly they are colour prints not B&W. I think worth trying Royal Gloss which, contrary to the name, is more lustre than gloss. It has a white base. I also use Gold Silk on some prints. This has a slightly off-white base as implied by the name. But I think a paper with a pure white base may be better for monochrome.

I've used Hahnemuhle papers for black and white and was pleased; unfortunately I can't remember which one. :-(

Send Permajet an email and ask them. They will give you the answer. Subscribe to their newsletters as they be a mine of Info. Gold Silk is good but it is a Warm Tone paper. Oyster is a Good All round paper,. I just spent £171 with Permajet. PhotoArtSilk is my fav paper, along with PortraitWhite (use for my Flowers with texture in them. Also used Gold Silk and Oyster for my B&W. I print for club comps and enter some RPS comps and I enter the WPF Salon. My printers are Canon Pixma Pro 10s 2x Canon 100s + an Epson ET-8550 printer. I now prefer my Epson for B&W. Good Luck

To get a really neutral grey, you may find that you need to get the printer profiled so you have a custom printer profile to match the printer inks you use with the specific paper. You can probably get this done by printing a test patch and sending it away to be analysed and to get the profile generated and emailed back to you.

Fotospeed certainly offer this service, it's free with their papers. I think Permajet may well offer something similar, but have never tried it. The Fotospeed profiles seems to work pretty well with my Epson printer.
