  • Movie + still pics?

I've tried looking through the manual and googling, but I can seem to find an answer. And I will be experimenting, but thought I would ask here....

On the EM1 MKiii while shooting video, can you take a still image? I've read a few things that say yes (depending on video settings) but it splits the video, and some that say it used to? I'm brand new to shooting video. I've watched some youtube videos and I have the basic movie settings where (I think) I want them, but I'm definitely still learning.

I'm trying to get a definitive answer for you. I think this feature disappeared a few years ago (probably when the E-M1 Mark II arrived), but I'm trying to get this confirmed or advice on how to enable it if it is still available.

As I suspected, later OM-D models, like your E-M1 Mark III, no longer support still shooting while recording video. The recommended work-around is to extract frames from your video footage afterwards.

With 4K video you can get good quality JPEG still at 8 megapixel resolution.

See page 173 of the E-M1.3 manual. You can select a frame from a 4K movie to save as a still image.

I suspected this as well after looking through my files from yesterday's experiments. Extracting an 8 mp jpg isn't nearly the same as having a raw file, though. Thanks for confirming.

I read that and I wasn't sure if that it meant that was the ONLY way to do it (as " hey - look - you can extract an image if you'd like one!)", or if there was an option buried in the menus to take an actual still while shooting video in addition to the extracting a frame.
