  • Latest firmware breaks video stabilisation

For those who do video - worth checking this out:

I found that video stabiliser performance on our studio E-M1 mark ii bodies with the firmware released by Olympus on 03 December 2020 deteriorated rather tha...

Cheers, I’m still on the previous firmware, would mainly affect video users like u said and give a dilemma for anyone adding the 150-400 to their bag.
I fall into neither camp but was considering updating it. I will hold off. Hopefully they will bring out an update and accidentally add a couple more features to it to compensate.
    Heres to wishful thinking 😃

OK, I am missing something. What is the problem he is showing?

The video is comparing two different cameras!

        EM1 mk1 with firmware 4.6
        vs
        EM1 mk2 with firmware 3.4

both running the latest firmware for their respective bodies.

Can someone explain, please? I can see that the image on the Mk1 does seem to be slightly more stable but that's not what he is claiming.

He is NOT comparing two mk2s each with different firmware.

The 4.6 is the older E-M1. The new firmware in the E-M1ii is the problem (3.4).

Invalid comparison. He should compare two mk2s otherwise it's meaningless.

Well, I guess his point is that he already upgraded his mk ii and the video stabilisation got a lot worse. So he then compared it to a 6 year old camera - and the older camera is better. I guess it's not a direct old/new firmware comparison on the same camera, but just a demonstration of how bad it is now is on the latest version.

Starting to wish I hadn’t been so quick to upgrade my Em1Mk3 now, feels like they might have some quality control issues with pushing out the firmware updates, hope I am wrong!

I used mine yesterday after the upgrade and apart from noticing that the f8 limit on hi-res modes had been removed, the camera worked just fine.

I try to look at the actual facts before believing anything posted on YouTube / Twitter ...et al. I know it's not easy but there is so much garbage out there these days.

The linked YouTube post at the start of this thread proves nothing. It compares apples with oranges. How he can claim it is the end of his business is simply bizarre IMHO.

I would really like to hear from users who have the EM1 mk2, who have upgraded the firmware and do video to see if they feel the same?

His claims were a bit hyperbolic for sure - but his point I think is that the stabilisation is so bad that if he'd had filmed a wedding (a critical one-off event) it would have been a disaster.

It is odd that they updated to the new firmware on an E-M1 Mk2, noticed a difference compared to another same camera model they didn't yet upgrade then posted a video comparing it to a much older camera. He could have posted a comparison with the upgraded Em1Mk2 to one that wasn't upgraded if there was a huge noticeable difference. Also he does not say what lens is used - IS or non-IS. He seems a bit annoyed as he has a wedding video business and uses Olympus cameras - maybe he posted his complaint in a bit of rush. If it was my business I would have contacted Olympus support first having seen a potential issue and held off upgrading any more cameras, but what do I know about the wedding video business.

Anyway, I did a quick video test on my E-M1 Mk3 and I cannot see any video stability issues with the 100-400, 12-100 F4 or 17mm f1.8 lenses. There is an odd issue with audible rattling focus noise on the 12-100 when using C-AF that mucks up on-camera audio with video but that was probably there before (another rabbit hole to look into..). I haven't updated the Mk2 as there is not much reason to do so in a hurry.

I did a very rough and ready test with both my EM-1MKII and MK III wandering around the dining room (it's horrible outside) taking a video and I did not notice any difference to before the update, not that I have done much video.. Again like BDennis I noticed an audible clicking/rattling sound with my 12-40 Pro and another lens I tried but having never done a video in silence I do not know if that is new or not. It is barely audible though. As far as the visual jitter is concerned I rely on the IBIS alone for stabilisation without engaging digital stabilisation but have briefly tried that and again seems fine.

With the E-M1 II it is possible to roll back to 3.3 with LightSnowDev. https://lightsnowdev.com/Olympus/OMD/OMD-E-M1II.html
E-M5 III can also be rolled back there too. https://lightsnowdev.com/Olympus/OMD/OMD-E-M5III.html
