As some might have noticed I found a niggle with the M1X last week and pre ordered a OM1 from a local shop , however I had the chance to meet up with a friend this morning to bolt my lens on his OM1 body and play with it in real world conditions , .. yes it’s lighter and yes it’s fast and the EVF is brighter .. but after coming home and weighing up the shots the difference really is so minute’ to notice .. I was viewing the photos with the wife hanging over my shoulder as she has a very keen eye and we both agreed that there’s not £1500 pounds worth of difference between them … so I have cancelled the order and will hang fire for the time being and wait till I hav3 the cash spare to buy one ..
the 300mm f4 though might be another story . Watch this space 🤫🤫🤫😜

Good that you got to try the OM-1 with your friend Jeff rather than spend the money and be disappointed the money spent wasn’t worth it for you. The 300 f4 has been my best lens ever for wildlife I would say.

New prices for the 300mm do seem to have rocketed. You can get some second hand below £2k, seems to be some on MBP:

Still a lot of money though and you take a chance for second hand - it is worth checking how much OMDS charge for a fixed price repair out of warranty, it was about £184 to get mine fixed which I thought a good deal considering the use I’ve had since getting it in 2016.

Yeah, the IQ differences are tiny, if any. Certainly at base ISO I reckon there is no practical difference between them. But I've seen OOC JPEGs at ISO 6400 and 12800 that do look cleaner from the OM1 compared to the EM1.3/x. But at these sort of ISOs, I reckon DxO/Topaz etc would probably do a much better job working on a raw file from either.

I think where the OM1 definitely pushes ahead of the EM1.3 is the subject recognition AF - but of course you have that on the EM1x anyhow. The EM1x also looks like a more robust and suitable body for handling big lenses. But then again, the OM1 has faster sensor readout and a much improved EVF. Shame about the dials though!

I was reminded again recently about the claims from OM that the OM1 would give 2-stop improvement to DR and noise/ISO performance. These really are miles off the mark.

Hmmm just realised when I started to PP his camera was set to shoot in j.peg’s .. that changes nothing though , yes I could probably get better results with my own settings but it can wait

I've just bought an "excellent" EM1X for £475 on TP to run alongside my OM1 - will be very interesting to compare.

Yeah I did see that Malcolm , 😎 after todays play I can say there is a difference but it’s really marginal , apart from sunlight getting in the EVF thanks to my specs , I rarely can fault the E.M1X in fact I preferred the bird I.d on it today .. of cause in time if I owned and set up the om1 it might well prove to be better but a £1500 price differential is to much for marginal improvements
