I am fortunate to have a 150-400 lens which I am very happy with, with one exception - The lens cap. When using with the lens hood on the lens it does not fit well and keeps coming off. Being a cheap Scot I have used disposable shower caps (acquired when staying in hotels) but I am looking for something more durable! Does anyone have any suggestions about suitable alternatives for a lens cap that can be used with the lens hood on? Hopefully that makes sense.
Thanks in advance.
This lens takes a 95mm cap. The Version 2 Zemlin Photo lens cap is 3D printed fiberglass-reinforced ABS plastic. The tough urethane Skid Pad grips smooth surfaces when the lens is placed face down on a table top or smooth floor. Screws and spring wire are stainless steel. Lens cap can be installed or removed with the lens hood in place. Unlike the Version 1 cap for this lens, the V2 95mm cap can be used with a filter mounted on the lens.
The lens cap on the 150-400 is designed to be used when the lens hood is reversed for storage. Hence strap goes round the lens hood attachment knob. I've never used the lens cap when lens hood is pointing forward.
The lens hood is large enough not to require a lens cap when lens is horizontal or pointed down when carrying.
I do use an Urth UV filter as a just in case protection again rain and my lens cleaning skills.
As rustyarrow points out there are plenty of 95mm lens caps if you prefer. These are probably a good idea on windy days when the large lens hood makes lens less manageable and needs to be removed.
If you want a to keep with a good quality and good fitting traditional clip in lens cap to correctly match the lens, then use the cap from the 150 - 600 "LC-95 Lens Cap".
Personally I have not found the need for a lens cap once the hood is fitted. The lens hood provides good protection.
Like gazza95 I don't use a lens cap when the hood is out (and also use an urth filter). I have a cheap 95mm lens cap from amazon for using when the hood is reversed. It will fit when the hood is out (just tried it) but is a bit of a fiddle getting it securely on with the hood on.
I wonder what, in practical terms, in the field using the short version vs the 'matching' size version would make? Though they also do a 2 part version with if I read it right an available mini attachment for use with the lower half of the 2 part model.

The lens hoods seem expensive when the lens hood from the 150-600 is the same fitting and retails at £89.99

Thanks Gary - I use the lens cap to try and prevent dust etc getting on the lens when carrying or in the car - need something quick to remove. I am not a fan of filters as in my experience they have had an impact on image quality. When I had a Canon 500mm lens I used a tupperware lid on the lens hood.
Cheers
