  • Another Chargeable "Upgrade" from Topaz Labs

Topaz Labs recently announced Topaz Photo AI 3 only a few months after charging for the last upgrade to v2.4

I am still running 2.3 and will stick with it.

I'm mulling it over, currently running 2.1.

They state that any purchase in the last year will allow you to upgrade for free :

"If you purchased Photo AI in the past year, this latest release is included with your upgrade license. You can download the latest here."

I also got the upgrade mail offer for version 3 that included the following:

Because you own an older version of Photo AI, upgrade to the latest for only $99.
I'm already on version 3.0.2 so it would appear that one hand doesn't know what the other one is doing at Topaz. But, as Scottwin has mentioned, if you launch Photo AI an Update available notice pops up in the top right corner and should indicate if the latest version is included in your one year payment.

So it seems they want $99 per year from users to keep "up to date".

Yet, some people complain about the Adobe Photography bundle. With that, you get so much more for a similar price.

Yes, as it is with any software (except freeware like OM Workspace etc).

The difference being that if you stop paying Adobe you can't use the software anymore, while with Topaz you can continue to use it as long as it does what you expect and need.

I bought separately DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI some years ago now.

When I check for updates I'm continually told 'Your software is up to date'

Yes I still run the original two programmes, and they just do fine...just for the original cost...

I would not mind paying an update fee, but I think $99 is a bit steep...

Dave, they are only doing further updates for Photo AI & Gigapixel AI now.

DeNoise and Sharpen were listed as discontinued quite some time ago due to being replaced by Photo AI. The only other standalone, Gigapixel AI, has been updated to version 7 and can still be purchased. I suspect that Gigapixel will be discontinued sooner or later due to the same features being available in Photo AI, although it is possible that they may continue with it due to it being very useful to those only needing to up-rez images for printing.

Gigapixel AI will apparently be more for mobile devices in the future while Photo AI being designed for 'photographers'.

It's just an annual renewal & it happens that if you don't have 3 yet then you get it if you buy updates for a(nother) year. Mine is due in October, but I have the following (plus Giga pixel active).
