  • Might just be me.

I'm running Windows 7 and am perfectly happy with it and do not intend to download Window 10. I'll stay like this until I have to get a new machine.
Now this might just be me but when the little icon about Window 10 appeared in my system tray at the bottom os the screen it wasn't a problem but over the last week or so when ever I start my computer I started getting a blue square pop-up about downloading it.
If I opened my browser ( I use Chrome) at same time as the pop-up appeared it locked up Chrome so I had to go to the task list and stop the process to get it to work again.
I did a bit of reading and found if you uninstalled Windows KB3035583 which put it there in the first place the thingy in the system tray and the pop-up goes away, which it has.
I think it will offer me this update again when the updater runs but I will hide it, hopefully job done.
To cut a long story short this seems to have cured the lock-ups and got rid of the annoying pop-up., anyone else noticed this?
    All the best

I have the thingy but have not noticed any pop-ups. Generally I let it put all the monthly updates on, and did the last lot last week. Like you I intend to stay on 7 until it's time for a new machine.

I get a small, blank, white, window popup that I too have to stop with the task manager. I'm using firefox, so maybe that's why it's white

I have the pop-up & I usually close it before doing anything else & alls well (& I use G Chrome), but thanks for the heads up on the update that puts it there.

That's always there, but this is a larger pop-up box (with blue) telling us the free upgrade is for a limited time only (or words to that effect) & next time I get it I will try to get a screen shot if I can.

I decided to to remove that update & now there's no annoying little white window on my task bar.

It's about the size of a post it note, with nothing on it

You may yet get to see it, but I won't now that I've uninstalled that update.

                    As Andy says...
Once you have uninstalled Update KB3035583 you need to make sure that it doesn't get automatically re-installed the next time Windows Update runs. You can do this as follows:
                    1. Start Windows Update and select Check for Updates
                    2. When this has completed click on the () Recommended Update(s) is/are available
                    3. From the resulting list of recommended updates select KB3035583
                    4. Right-click on this item and choose "Hide Update" (you may need administrator privilege to do this).

Job done - this update will not get re-installed.
                    Chris

Since I use Skype and I don't see a problem with Silverlight they are updated.

                          Re: Might just be me.

                          Andy,
As well as the newly undead KB3035583, you should check if the following updates are now on your machine - and then uninstall and hide them.
                          KB3083710
                          KB2952664
                          KB2976978
These are also part of the OS upgrade process. I think you will only get one or other of the KB29xxxx updates depending on whether your PC runs W7 or W8.1.

It is probably sensible to change your Windows Update settings to "notify me when new updates are available..." That way you can check if the KBs above have been reissued and also (by looking at the further info link) whether any of the other updates each month contain words such as 'facilitating the OS upgrade' or similar. Give any of these a wide berth unless/until you intend to move to W10.
                          Chris
