I am considering backing up the I images most important to me online...or in the cloud. Does anybody already do this if so how do you find them and which would you recommend?
    Thanks for any advice

    Re: online backup

All my back ups are on a couple of external hard disks
If working with the cloud I use Dropbox http://db.tt/yXFxoy0Xwhich is free up to a certain level of storage
Once you install Dropbox it is just like another directory and if installed on several machines ( home computer, tablet, smart phone) you can access the data where ever you are

      Hi Chris,
Thank you, yes I have several TBS of external hard drive back up, but this all seems rather vulnerable and is really not secure unless I keep them away from my home, which I don't do due to inconvenience of regularly backing up if they re not in the house.
I have a dropbox account but it is full of work stuff.
Really not sure if online back up is for me but thought I would look into options.
      Thanks again

Google Drive is an option, but strangely it's not capable of showing image thumbnails. SugarSync is also another option for you. Due to the now massive storage size Flickr would make a decent backup option as well now..

            Thank you
Our ISP is provided by my husbands work so I do not think that would be an option.
Yes i was wondering about flickr does anybody know of any negatives?

I'd seriously Consider Backblaze as an online storage backup, very cheap £33 per year, very secure, plus unlimited storage capacity.

Backblaze is a pioneer in robust, scalable low cost cloud backup and storage services. Enterprise hot storage, low cost backup and archive, and more.

I'll stand to be corrected, but whilst you can simultaneously upload multiple images, I think you can only download them one at a time, so it's not ideal for recovery scenarios.
Also, no good for backing up none image files such as word docs etc.

                  Hi Tom,
Yes I am liking what I see, do you use them? My only concern is that we have an upload limit and as Backblaze is so automated I am worried I might go over the limit. Also I don't need all files backed up, can I select to back up a specific folder/images manually instead of going for the automated version?
                  Thanks again

                      Re: online backup

If you have large amounts of data to back up then the first time you sync up to an online service will probably take an awful long time. It might also be worth checking with your ISP to see if you have any data/usage limits.

Flickr is now offering 1TB of free storage to members. It's also more than a storage service; your photos will be visible and there are quite a lot of facilities for tagging them and categorising them.

                          Re: online backup

This tale may be fiction but..
A Storage Cloud providing company in the US was allegedly delinquent in dealing with the IRC (US tax office). The IRS took over the cloud storage facility and closed it down. The Cloud storage was storing a collection of images and prevented the owner of the images from accessing them. Any talk of copyright owned by the photographer was rebuffed by the IRS saying that the images were basically 0s and 1s (ie digital data) and so copyright could not be claimed by any one.

                          The photographer lost his pictures.

I do not know if it true - however it does raise an issue with cloud storage of precious images. Check where the cloud is located, which country - which state - this could effect the laws dealing with stored data.
Consider the reliability of access in the event of communication failures eg satellites being shot down, undersea cables being sabotaged, fuel and power outages etc.

I would use Cloud storage as a further back up to the three levels of back up I run at the moment.

I think that rotating a set of hard drives containing the images to a remote location, ie the next door but one's house may be an easier and more secure way. Unless there is a gas explosion that takes out three or more houses. (again not unknown)

                            Re: online backup

I would not recommend a single cloud storage service as a primary backup. You should make your own physical backups (and store the backups at a separate location from the originals) and use cloud storage as a secondary backup.

Cloud storage is much more than a backup facility anyway. It's there for convenience of access, for file management and accessibility, and for file sharing.

Is it possible to make images private so they are not visible and is there a file size limit?
