  • Olympus Software?

    Hello everyone,

I have searched the forum but I'm not entirely sure what to look for so sorry if this question has already been answered already.

I was wondering if Olympus have some kind of software which allows you to view what your shooting in live view on your computer? The reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure I saw a vid on Youtube a few months back where the guy was doing exactly that... but so far I haven't found anything.

I have an E-520 with Zuiko 35mm macro lens.

    Thanks.

They did but now they have discontinued the program, it was called Olympus Studio 2.

Studio 2 (and even early Studio 1 with the right drivers) allows for tethered shooting but as is won't allow a live view on the computer monitor at the same time for that you need an extra av/usb composite cable (which it seems you can't actually buy in the uk ) and a video capture card to capture the AV sent from the camera - not exactly straightforward but doable with a bit of effort apparantly - if you can track down the composite cable in the uk or even patch one together yourself. I know the very video you have seen on youtube and it could well be Studio 2 used in this way - but if it is, it's certainly not made clear the extra steps / hardware needed to access the features they demonstrate. If it was a new alpha / beta program they were using that somehow done away with the need for a composite cable + tv card then they've never released it to the public and after 2 years I very much doubt they ever will.

Thanks for putting me right Paul, I did try studio 2 and taking direct pictures to the laptop but I was never excited about it. But like you say for tethered shooting must have its difficulties and I appreciate your explanation.

There are a couple of non Oly solutions such as Pine Tree

There is also an old thread on four thirds user

and an interesting Oly page Here

Not much time for a longer reply at the moment.

Thanks for the replies so far guys

@peak4 do you know if any of the alternatives you mentioned support live view on the computer?

            Cheers.

                Re: Olympus Software?

The Pinewood one doesn't for the same reason Olympus Studio dosn't - the usb to oly multiconnector cable that comes with your camera is incapable of carrying an AV signal from the camera or more accurately software simply can't pull an AV signal from your camera via the usb cable - you need the AV / USB combo cable to do what you ask. I suspect that different camera firmware would be needed to send an AV signal down the USB cable - which is possibly why Olympus have never released software like that shown in the video - it simply wouldn't work with existing cameras.

I would guess that if software like that in the video is ever released it will be at the same time as the new pro-level camera is released.
