I’ve not had this issue. It sounds like a lens problem, but do you have another lens to try and eliminate the camera body being the issue?

There are some suggestions on cleaning lens electrical contacts here but it sounds like you’ve ruled that out:

Another daft question, is the pin engaging correctly (clicking into place) when mounting the lens? You could try tightening it a little more or twisting it back and forth to see if the pin clicks.

Try doing a full reset "Initialize all settings".
        Set the AF to C-AF
Set Shutter mode to Sequential Low
Set C-AF Release Priority to OFF (This will force the camera to only take a picture when it thinks it has focus)
Set AF Scanner ON (This will force the camera to rack focus from 0 to infinity)
Set AF Area Pointer ON2 (This will show the focus points active at all times)
Set Reset Lens ON (This will reset the lens to it's original position, though I think this is for zooms)
Try to focus close and far again.
Everything should work as expected at this point. Otherwise you may need to service the lens.

        Other things to try.
Try a different lens. Does this behavior continue?
Engage the manual clutch and see if you can manually focus, then disengage and try to autofocus again.
Set AF-ON in MF Mode to YES. Try using the AF-ON button. Maybe your shutter button is malfunctioning.

Ian Thanks. I only recently heard about this forum. I post over at mu43 sometimes and someone posted a link here. Great to find another m4/3 community!

Thank to all for suggestions. I've tried everything and have made a decision.

It is a weird problem, Olympus suggested sending the gear to them but rather than face delays as I am within the return period for both camera and lens (only bought a couple of weeks ago) I have decided to return both and get replacements. The suppliers have been very good so no problem there.

          Thanks again.

I had focus problems in my 300mm after a small shock (in the hood, no visible marks after). I needed to send it for repair. Perfect after that.

              Here we go again!!

Just received replacement new OM-1 and a 'like new' s/h 300mm lens. So far so good, focus changes from near to far easily and the motor is much quieter. Just got to redo all the settings on the OM-1 now!!
