  • 300mm f4 Pro focus issue

    Using 0M-1 and 300mm f4 Pro lens.

If I focus on a subject at say 6ft then shift to an object at say 200ft the focus does not change and vice versa. The lens is set to focus 1.4m - ∞ so it should refocus. Anyone else had this?

I've tried various settings on the camera doesn’t make any difference.

Is this a lens problem or a camera problem? Which actually controls the focus motor in the lens?

Might as well get the obvious suggestion out of the way first. Have you accidentally moved the clutch on the lens to the manual focus position? It is easily done.

Hi Ron, good point but I have that as inoperative.

Ive had a similar problem. The issue turned out to be me accidentally knocking/moving the joystick which moved the focus box, upwards on the screen

At least you found the answer! I've tried various focus modes on the camera without success. Does your lens focus from min to max distance OK?

        Hi
Have experienced this with 300mm and my 150-400....... These are things I check

        1) Has manual focus switch been set on?
        2) Try focussing at a mid point with high contrast. This normally works.
        3) Is AF Scanner on or of ( only for C-AF )
        4) Reduce focus area as All points makes this worse
        5) Use C-AF instead of S-AF
        6) Use of convertor makes this worse

          Hi Gary

          No

          2) Try focussing at a mid point with high contrast. This normally works.
It will not focus on another point. I need to focus manually to get it moving again.

          3) Is AF Scanner on or of ( only for C-AF )
          Doesn't make a difference

          4) Reduce focus area as All points makes this worse
          Tried from single point upwards

          5) Use C-AF instead of S-AF
          Always do

          6) Use of convertor makes this worse
Had same problem with and without converter

Does this happen to you often or rarely?

I happens most of time when you try to go from one extreme to another. Normally focusing on a mid point gets is moving quicker. You do need to wait several seconds and then it moves.

This sounds like you are stuck in manual focusing somehow. Can you share picture of back of camera with SCP.

Have you accidentally set the in camera focus range limiter? It overrides the setting on the lens. I have managed to do this a few times. It can be very frustrating until I realise!

Interesting but no, I've never used that. I can focus at min distance and max distance but the lens won't change from one to the other.

-even with conflicting AF Limiter settings (re: EM1X) I've found the lens will always attempt to focus, and for some time, but simply will not lock...then I remember to check AF Limiter.
(i haven't used AF Limiter with the OM-1)

"I can focus at min distance and max distance but the lens won't change from one to the other."
how are you achieving focus at min and max distances?
"If I focus on a subject at say 6ft then shift to an object at say 200ft the focus does not change and vice versa"
will the lens not re-focus at all when AF button is de-pressed or does it just take longer than expected?
is anything happening...can you see (EVF or rear screen) that the AF is racking back and forth at least?
are you using BBF or shutter button AF?

            Focussing as normal AFC -M.

Lens will not refocus, it as though it is dead!

            Nothing at all

Nope. just does not move, no 'hunting'.

are you using BBF or shutter button AF?
            Shutter button, never use BBF

Ouch if it’s not even trying to AF then I’m out of ideas.
              Sorry.

Are you using custom modes at all? Setting the focus clutch on the lens to inactive using the camera menu isn't 'universal' it can be saved to one custom mode and still be active in others. Just a thought.

No, nothing like that. I do appreciate these suggestions, it would be great to find a solution. I am sure there is a major fault somewhere, it's just identifying what. The lens motor problem or the camera not supplying the power. (if that is how it works)
