  • Don't knock the 75-300 f4.8-6.7 ll

    I'm very happy with mine.

Inexpensive, light, not as fast as I'd like, but IMHO a very decent performer.

I carried out a rough-arsed trial on the back of a cereal box.

    Focal length....300mm.

Distance...... 8ft to fill the frame.

Lighting...terrible as can be seen by the exposure.

    Exposure...ISO 6400, 1/640 @ f8

    Hand held.

Shot in RAW, converted to JPG, Denoised, resized and sharpened.

    The image is un-cropped.

I put the barcode in the corner on purpose and focused on it.

Some/a lot say it's no good at 300mm, well make your own mind up.

I'm looking forward to even better results outdoors with some sunshine, ISO200 and high shutter speed.

There was no jiggery-pokery in the trial, I used my standard procedure

It works even better for bird photos 5-10 metres away too.

Thanks Dave. I dug that lens out to use again before I could lift heavier items again back in 2020 (after major surgery).

It is a bit soft at 300mm AND infinity focus together. If you want inifinity then zoom out to 280mm and all is fine. Focus on something closer (cereal box, bird table, etc) and 300mm is no problem. Ease of use is fantatsic.

The whole secret of using a long lens for birding is not to take shots from further away but to get closer and fill the frame
