  • Is Olympus developing a new 150-400mm PRO Zoom?

    From 4/3 Rumours... I really hope so

    https://www.43rumors.com/ft2-is-olym...00mm-pro-zoom/

    When they did that survey a while ago a long pro lens is what I said I would be looking out for

    With the IS capabilities we have seen with the 12-100 and EM1.2 we can only hope for a similar setup.

    If it had a decent close focus as well it could be a superb lens for insects etc.

    Regards
    Andy

    Yes, it would be nice except it will be another lens I'll GAS over that I can only dream about.

      Sounds good to me if it happens and is competitive with the Panny 100-400 in price. I'd want it good in close up too though. I wonder how long we would have to wait?

        I have a feeling it would be beyond my budget but useful for those pesky garden birds (if only they would stay still or fly slowly in a straight line).

          If this came in at f4 through the range I would get one .

              My other system has a 600f4 mkII so price and weight would be somewhat cheaper.

                  I would like it to be smaller and lighter than the Panasonic. What else would it need to be competitive enough to make people swap over to it?

                    Thinking about this a little more seriously (while trying to suppress the gear envy, of course ), I wonder if it would? The two big monsters in the old 4/3 line-up were the 300/2.8 fixed and the 90-250/2.8 zoom. They were near as dammit the same size, weight and price, whereas a 250/2.8 fixed should be noticeably smaller, lighter, and therefore cheaper than a 300. Presumably this is because adding all the bits needed for a high quality zoom is a significant extra.

                    It may only be idle speculation, but it's fun.

                      Is the lower end (150mm) not low enough? I can understand that that it fits in with the top end of the 40-150mm, but an overlap might be preferable IMHO.

                      I would prefer the 100-400mm range...………..

                        Re: Is Olympus developing a new 150-400mm PRO Zoom?

                        I prefere it first of all better (IQ) then Panasonic, a PRO lens without any compromises. I do not mind if it weights a bit more.

                        If is about portability, you cannot beat 75-300mm or 100-300mm which are also much cheaper.
                        Building another portable 100-400mm does not make any sense, especially when it cost as much as an PRO lens.

                        The compromises of Panasonic 100-400mm are:
                        -too slow F/6.3;
                        -not very sharp wide open at 400mm, needs to be stopped done at F/8.0.

                        If Olympus can fix the 2 problems, would be great:
                        -make an 100-400 or 150-400mm which has F/5.6 at the end;
                        -make it sharp wide open at 400mm;
                        -make the possibility to put the TC 1.4x on it, as Fuji did already.

                        So, yes, Fuji made a better 100-400mm than Panasonic which is sharp wide open (F/5.6) and supports an TC 1.4x. Nearly the same price but 40% heavier.
                        With teleconverter on it, the Fuji combo becomes 140-560mm F/5.6-8.0 which offers flexibility in some situations.

                          Re: Is Olympus developing a new 150-400mm PRO Zoom?

                          If you want 300mm at F4 or 420mm at F5.6 there is already a Pro quality Olympus product - so I'm not sure why they would want to kill off this product's sales with a 150-400 zoom.

                          However I could imagine that a 100-250 F4 zoom with Sync-IS and MC14 compatability would be complementary to the existing range of lenses.
                          It would be useful for sports and aviation photography & similar (very handy for the forthcoming Tokyo Olympic Games ) - I'm really hoping they'll make something like this.

                            What a good suggestion. My wallet hopes they don't do that!

                              Just when you think you've got your gear sorted - 2x EM1 plus 12-100 and 100-400 in my case - along comes something else to confuse the situation.
