  • 12-40 Locked in Manual

Yesterday I was in Liverpool doing a photowalk. 12-40mm f2.8 attached to the E-M1. Everything was working fine, I'd taken a 50-60 photographs all using Auto-Focus. When i stopped for a break I put the E-M1 back in my back. On resuming, the E-M1 was in Manual Focus mode and I could not get it to switch to Auto. I tried removing the lens, removing both batteries, doing a complete reset but the E-M1 wouldn't come out of Manual Focus. Not wanting to ruin the day I continued to shoot in manual for some time. About half an hour later I switched the lens to the 40-150 for some close-ups and was immediately able to use Auto-Focus. Switching back to the 12-40 and I was back in Manual. Couldn't get AF to work. I continued with the 40-150 for another hour and then tried the 12-40 again. AF worked straight away without any problems.

Anyone else had this problem and have you been able to solve it?

I should say I had this same problem about a week after I got the M1 and 12-40 but I put it down to something I had down att as a while later the AF started working again. At the time I didn't have the 40-150 to try changing lenses.

I've had the M1 since may last year so I'm more familiar with it now.

    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Is the focus ring on the lens in manual focus mode? Ie, pulled backwards?

That's OK. I've had someone (you may know) ring me up because his XZ3 was stuck in MF. It has a lever on the front that can be bumped (like the Stylus 1), so these little things can catch you out initially.

That dreaded MF ring. I was shooting a group photograph and I was wondering why my AF did not work. Thankfully I had that 35-100 on another camera and I did a 3 shot panorama stitch. Saved the day. Is there anyway to disable that ring??

No, it's a feature not a fault. Most people buy that lens partly because of it.

Thank you for all your replies. I hate to say this but I didn't even know it existed until now. I just tried it and everything is working as it should. That will teach me to RTFM.

One of the nice features of the E1, not repeated in later bodies, was the ability to use a switch to change from manual to auto focus. We all complained at the lack of it in subsequent E series. Now it is incorporated in the lens, a good thing in my view, but we all complain we don't know it is there!

I just looked up what RTFM meant! Does it really mean, "Read the Facts Margaret"?

The same thing happened to me. I spent the whole day at Minsmere thinking that I couldn't take any photos because the camera was broken.
