  • EX25 compatibility

    Hi

I get somewhat puzzled when reading through the Olympus compatibility spec for the EX25 vs. what is written on this forum and my own conception of macro extenders. There are some discrepancies as well as bits and pieces missing.

    Lenses missing from list
I was surprised to see 70-300 and 50-200 missing from the list. To my understanding there should be no reason why telezooms should not work with the extender. I did a quick test 70-300 + EX25 and it worked fine as I expected. Are there any known issues with lenses not explicitly listed as supported?

While discussing the topic, I would also like to take the opportunity asking if there exists data from other source specifying the magnification and focusing ranges for lenses not listed on the Olympus web site.

    Focusing = MF (all lenses)
I know, moving the camera is an effective way of achieving perfect focus with macro extenders. However, to my understanding there should be no reason why AF would not work (assuming subject has enough contrast). Is there a reason why Olympus would not state they support AF? The 70-300 AF worked fine in my quick test. By the way I found C-AF helped in tracking subjects in motion.

    Semi-cryptic footnote related to Zuiko 50mm F2.0
    Magnification/Focusing range 0.49 - 0.98x / 21.3 - 23.1 cm*
*When using the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50mm f2.0 Macro lens, use manual focus at 0.8 to 0.98X( 0.3m or less on the lens distance scale ).

I dont get this. I don't own that lens though so it is not an issue, but still would like to understand.

I can confirm that EX-25 does support AF in the lenses I tested (14-54 Mk II and 50-200 non-SWD).

You have of course to be within the focusing range (which is being altered with the EX-25 attached) to be meaningful, but it does work and I too am surprised that Olympus claims otherwise.

      Thanks,

I had a look in the E620 user manual which lists all of teh Zuiko lenses available. The information provided on page 129 lists your lenses among compatible lenses (as well as the 70-300).

Still, Olympus state that MF only is supported...

        Re: EX25 compatibility

The Japanese site (English) has the ZD70-300 included in its chart.

There is a nice usable advantage for closer focusing using the EX25 with that lens.

          Re: EX25 compatibility

A possible reason that Oly don't talk about focussing and the EX-25 with these longer lenses, is that with a zoom lens at macro distances you DON'T focus using the focus-ring, you use the ZOOM. And for zooming, use the focus-ring. ie at macro-distances the zoom and focus rings are swapped over.

But certainly the EX-25 makes the 50-200 into a very useable in-the-field short-distance lens.

The fun really comes when you try to add an EC-14 to the mix! Yes it is possible, but Oly and the lens won't tell you that!

              Hi,

I tested this combination (50-200 SWD + EC14 + EX25) and ,yes, it worked but AF was no longer supported...
