One of my favorite types of photography is Close-Ups usually of Nature's treasures. Today, I got an email about the Olympus 60mm F2.8 macro lens. The price has been reduced by 100 dollars and is now $399. I was wondering if anyone who has used this lens could share their reaction to it. I did read one thread in this forum about having trouble getting a true Macro but someone did provide a solution. When I was using my NIKON, pre Olympus days, I had a Tamron 90mm macro and it got a lot of use. I have actually used it on my new Olympus E1 MII attaching it by using a speed booster. So far, I have found it to be a bit of a challenge due to the manual focusing. I probably should give it more time, but boy, the Olympus 60mm is so nice and small and has auto focus too. What do you think?

I like my 60mm macro very much. I also used a 90mm Tamron in my Nikon days and did a side-by-side comparison, which showed that the Olympus lens had better contrast. With an E-M1 you also have the advantage of the in-camera stacking ability, which I use a lot for flower photography. I would not hold back.

Depends on how much Macro you want to do. I have that lens, but don't use it a lot, as Macro is not my forte...But I am very happy to have the lens in the "armoury", it is a really good lens, at 60mm,it's between "normal" lengths.I bought mine for £265|", so was not a big buy so to speak. The ability to get a 1:1 photo] is truly amazing, if not unique...

I have the 60mm f/2.8 and it is a useful lens, partly because it will give up to a 1:1 magnification but also because it will work with focus bracketing on the E-M1 & E-M1ii. Its downside is that it is a bit short in focal length for skittish insects like butterflies as the working distance is too close. It is, however, very sharp and is also weather sealed. For butterflies and the like a longer focal length is more useful but choices are limited. You can use Sigma 105mm & 150mm f/2.8 4/3rds mount lenses via an adaptor and these are both autofocus; I have the latter and it is a superb lens but it rarely comes up for sale and can be expensive. Manual focus lenses are also an option as you have found and the Tamron 90mm has a good reputation; turning on focus peaking can help in getting sharp shots. I have a manual focus Olympus OM 90mm f/2.0 which I love and still use quite often. If I ever win the lottery I will fork out for one of the legendary Voigtlander Apo Lanthar 125mm f/2.5 macro lenses that come up on Japanese eBay seller sites from time to time, usually priced at about £1,300, there is a Flickr group for this lens and the results are stunning.
Cheers,
JohnGG
