  • EM1 Mk2 upgrade???

I'm thinking about upgrading my em1 mk2, I have numerous Oly lenses all pro and my daughter also has an em1.

What I am trying to achieve is better subject tracking and better low light / less noise performance, also my second job is pushing me into being out and about a bit more (not that I need that pushing!) taking pics which will be wildlife primarily and also demoing the kit we sell, so will need something that will allow a bit of video and good in a variety of conditions.

Initial thoughts are the OM1 but lack of availability is making me look at other systems maybe use the new system for when tracking is needed and keep the Olympus for when I want a walkabout camera, so if you wanted the above what would you look at?

    regards,

    Matt

I upgraded from the EM1 Mk2 to the OM-1, I would recommend waiting for the OM-1. Take a look at what Andy Rouse has achieved with the OM-1.
I still have the Mk2 as a backup/second body, in fact I usually keep the 12/40 or 12/100 on the Mk2 and the 40/150 f2.8 or 100-400 on the OM-1.

      Hi David,

      Thanks for your reply.

I think that is a logical thing to do unfortunately with no idea when they will be available off the shelf it isn't really an option if it was just for myself I could but having been asked to run with a project I need to produce a few marketing images etc across a broad spectrum of things so need to act sooner rather than later.

i suppose i could jump to an x or mk3 but no ones ever really mentioned about an improvement in iso performance as such its been more about tracking etc.

I agree with Dave and do something similar myself. I also suggest that you to refrain from buying an E-M1 Mk III or E-M1X unless they address the shortcomings of the E-M1 Mk II with respect to your marketing project, if any. - Remember that all three cameras (E-M1 Mk II, E-M1 Mk III and E-M1X) all have the same sensor and so should have the same image quality. Rather order an OM-1 and wait for it to arrive. IMHO it is a huge advance on the E-M1 Mk III in many areas, although I can't speak for the E-M1X.

How about contacting OM Systems UK and asking if they can help you out - assuming you can demonstrate the project work you are doing, I know they loan cameras to pros so they may help you out... Nothing ventured etc...

The OM1 will give you better subject tracking, but will do nothing for noise / low light. For that you’ll need a bigger sensor!

Never having used a bigger sensor, how much better are they? I too feel an urge to try one but……🫤

But DxO, Topaz etc can make a big difference - but of course these tools work on FF too, so it just raises the bar on everything.

I am not tempted by a bigger sensor what I have does the job I need.

I was going to upgrade to an Em1 Mk3 from my two mk2s but after selling the rest of my Canon gear last week I went and bought the 8-25mm lens instead. Decided that my Mk2s do a good job anyway. Good Luck in what you do.

It was the new OM1, second hand with less than 700 shots on it.
