  • OM-1 RAW Support in iPad OS 16 and MacOS Ventura

I’ve read that the latest Apple OS versions for iPad and Mac are now supporting the OM-1 RAW file format.

    Apple have just release these:
macOS Ventura takes the Mac experience to a whole new level with groundbreaking capabilities that help users achieve more than ever.

iPadOS 16 takes the versatility of iPad even further, with new ways to collaborate via Messages, big updates to Mail, the Weather app, and more.

I’ve not updated yet - has anyone else using these with the OM-1 updated with any success yet? Maybe a bit early…

One problem I often have with going to the latest Mac version too soon is software support. Usually it breaks something like CaptureOne Pro which currently does not support MacOS Ventura according to their site.

I might update the iPad as that is less likely to break anything.

Perhaps they will apply updates to the older supported MacOS versions with the OM-1 RAW support, I think they did that before.

I updated my 2018 Mac Mini to Ventura this morning. Everything appears to work, including Capture One Pro. OM-1 ORF files are supported too. I did have to do some fiddling to get Sophos anti-virus to work, but a Sophos pop-up provided a link to tell me exactly what to do. The Opera browser was reported as "broken" and so I moved it to the bin, as suggested, and then downloaded and re-installed Opera. Everything works fine and nothing appears to have been lost.

I'll check it out further during the course of the day.

        Updated to Ventura and just tried to use Preview to open an OM-1.ORF file. It works fine.;

Thanks for the feedback folks. I need to set aside some time to do updates!

Sorry, a bit off topic but I updated to Ventura yesterday and have just discovered that my elderly copy of DeNoise AI (3.1.2) will no longer run. I don't really want to purchase a newer version as I not sure if it is worth it.

this is my quandary at the moment Ron . my i.mac is now to all intents and purposes past its sell by date .. cant update o.s running Catalina , and now L/R is coming up as not compatible to update . had a word with the boss lady who pulled faces and I dont understand stuff , but if I upgrade my system etc will my older stuff work and it also puts that OM1 further and further out of reach grrrrrrrrr

For those of you using Affinity Photo on MacOS Ventura be aware it does NOT support OM-1 raw files.

I've been waiting for them to fix this.... I won't be too happy if I have to buy an upgrade to get OM-1 support when it's more than six months since it was announced.

What I’ve done with current pre-Ventura MacOS is convert the ORFs to DNG with DxO PureRaw then open those with Affinity. A bit annoying still no ORF support though, I thought it relied on the OS support for some reason.

Why is it so important to update the macOS to Ventura so soon after its release when many third-party developers of your installed software may not have caught up yet?

I'm on macOS Monterey and probably won't upgrade until the next macOS update after Ventura is announced < That's what I normally do as it's safer.

Why do you need the macOS to support ORF files if your existing installed editing software already does?

Yes, often makes sense to leave the updates for a while but I was still on MacOS Big Sur so two versions behind and I needed to do some system maintenance clearing out files anyway. I was hoping the Ventura update would fix a couple of minor niggling issues I was having as well (it didn’t!).

I wanted the OM-1 RAW update because the only software I have that can otherwise preview the OM-1 files is OM Workspace and CaptureOne Pro. OM WS is very slow to preview a RAW file and you have to import the files into C1 Pro and generate previews and that also takes some time, only to find you already processed them. In the Mac Finder I can preview files a lot quicker than that and it helps a lot with trying to work out what photo session the images on a card or in a folder are from in the cases where I’ve been a bit disorganised with imports for some reason.

I also thought that Affinity Photo needed the MacOS RAW support to work on OM-1 files but as mentioned above that turned out not to be the case - I think it uses a library called LibRAW that needs an update for the RAW support. Anyway, I can convert the ORFs to DNG for Affinity. I use Affinity for some things that C1Pro doesn’t do like Astro stacking and composites.

I generally check various forums and software developer support pages to check that software like CaptureOne will be supported before updating MacOS (I’ve been burnt before!). I didn’t see any reasons not to update. Really major developers of packages like CaptureOne, Adobe etc ought to have been part of the Beta program to get their stuff compatible with a new OS anyway - it is standard practice if they’re doing their job properly. It’s normally the smaller developers that you need to give allowances for.

As it happens I’ve updated the iPad and Mac now with no problems at all!

At some point I’m going to upgrade to a new Mac when Apple announce the next batch of system upgrades for M2 Mac Mini etc. Meanwhile continuing with a 2018 Mac Mini and Ventura which is OK for CaptureOne Pro editing, just a bit slow for DxO PureRaw processing and video edits.

                Bill @BDennis,
A good friend of mine who has a comprehensive workshop at home and is expert at computer assemblies etc fitted the extra RAM for me with the help of a good online How-to video.

I used an early Mac Mini at work a few years ago and upgraded some internal components. I seem to recall that it involved the use of a paint scraper to open the case! I wonder if things have changed since then?

You still need a prying tool to open the one I have according to iFixit, yes a paint scraper might work! Also it needs the right type of screw drivers, torx or whatever. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac+min...acement/115309
