  • Shutter sound in SH1 & 2 on OM1

This might sound a daft question but is there an option to activate a shutter sound in these modes or are they always silent?

I don't know, but doubt you'll ever get a shutter sound for 120FPS! - I always hanker over the option for a (obviously fake) shutter sound with electronic shutter. on my M.2..... not gonna happen!

The only sound you would get is from the iris as it closes and opens. Barely audible, though. Why do you want a sound?

I haven't actually tried the higher frame rates on my OM-1, but I would have thought the iris would remain stopped down while shooting at 120fps.

Correct, the sound will be from the iris closing down at the start of the burst and opening at the end. So barely audible.

Personally I like the 'silent' shutter being just barely audible rather than as silent as a grave. The point is that nobody except the photographer with the camera right next to their face can hear it at all. It's always good to be able to hear, however barely, that any machine is working as it should.

I used to think I didn't ever want a silent shutter but then the OM-1 Menu opened up more options by selecting silent. I very quickly got used to it and it is now my default. You are aware of whenever the shutter fires anyway.

But I still detest silent electric cars! But that's an off-topic subject.

I find the sound of the shutter both reassuring, as has already been said it's nice to know something is happening, and also useful. In silent mode I have no feedback so in sequential mode I end up taking a large burst whether I want to or not (with shutter noise I can take a single frame even in sequential mode). Has to be said though I find the sound quite harsh compared to my old 1X and quite loud, it would be nice if we could control the volume. I do always go silent in a hide.

But in Silent modes the OM-1 isn't actually dead silent - You can feel the shutter and hear it very quietly in burst modes, so you do get feedback when you know what to listen for and feel. I use Back Button Focus.

You should hear a Canon 1DX-2 DSLR, now that is LOUD!!.

It's too quiet for me. I used to shoot Nikon DSLRs before I came to Olympus, so yes, I know loud as well. :-)

          Yup.
If someone invented the DSLR today they’d never be allowed in wildlife hides because of the disturbance they cause to animals.

On my last safari trip I was in a Pangolin photo boat with a Sony and a Canon owner, and it proved impossible to get an image of an impala drinking in front of us because every time the animal’s snout approached the water it got spooked by the rattle of dying technology…

Personally, I think that Olympus OMS have got the sound level of the Silent Shutter on the OM-1 spot on > Can only be heard/felt when face buried in the EVF and it's an advantage to be aware of its action (IMO).

I want that AF confirm sound but I want it soft or at least selectable on the audio level.

I shoot with models and when not using a strobe, would like the model to be able to hear the shutter, just single shots, can the shutter volume be adjusted? Using OM1s and OMD-EM1 mk3. Thanks

IIRC the most obvious sound and it is IMO none too loud compared to my old Canon SLRs and dSLRs is to use the mechanical shutter not the silent modes.

The beeper as covered in the OM1 manual on page 132 (common setting IIRC in the E-M1 mk3 but not on page 132.....i could not check as I no longer have the manual on the phone) is a beep intended only to be heard by the camera user. NB I rarely use the mechanical shutter and have no idea how audible it would be beyond the camera and on the silent shutter the first thing I always turn off is the 'beep'. I don't want to disturb the wildlife whose hearing is way better than mine

I think if you need the model to hear or be aware of the shutter going off.....try the mechanical shutter and if that is not loud enough I think you are snookered.

Hmmm! Thinking out of the box........if using OCF how about a unit behind you set to 1/64 power aimed at a dark felt cloth to minimise the light affecting the shot but could be enough 'light' to ensure model is aware that the shutter has fired???

I have been shooting with Silent Shutter with my OM-1 and E-M1 Mk III for many years and am now totally used to it. I only revert to mechanical shutter when I am going to be taking photos under artificial light, where there is a chance of banding.

Last week my niece and her husband returned from a one year wander around Europe. They started in France, but then wandered all over the rest of Europe. They bought an old stock Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk IV when in Greece, when the shutter of the old E-M10 Mk II, which I had given her for her 21st birthday, got stuck. Nothing they could do would free it. They were quoted up to three months to get it back from repair. - That was too long. So they bought a replacement.

When I picked them up from the airport (I was the only member of the family still in Brisbane over the festive season.), we got to taking about their camera problems. We looked over her E-M10 Mk II again. - There was nothing I could do with it. So I passed on the contact details of Anderson Camera Repairs in Capalaba and also the contact details of the OM Digital Solutions support centre in Sydney.

Before sending them on their way back home to the Sunshine Coast, I asked my niece, "Do you know that if you use the silent 'electronic' shutter, you don't have any wear and tear on the mechanical shutter?" I gave her my OM-1 to play with for a bit. Her immediate reaction was, "No! I don't like it. - I need the sound of the mechanical shutter as confirmation that I have taken the photo."

All of this was a bit of a roundabout way of saying that I can see the need for a shutter sound activated when the electronic (silent) shutter is activated. It doesn't need to be any more than a firmware update with sound being turned off by default, but allowing the user to turn on sound and adjust the volume if required.

These days I use silent shutter all the time , but when I used dslr my impression was that the clatter of a high speed shutter going off attracted the birds to look in the direction of the camera .
