I'm looking for a "pad/grip" that I can attach to the bottom of the tripod collar, to make it more comfortable, sitting in the palm of my hand and to provide some protection when it's rested on rough surfaces.
I'll be making some DIY prototypes, but if anyone knows of something, please let me know.
Can you not just rotate the collar through 180 degree's so it sits above the lens when not using on a tripod?
I can and do, for some of the time, mostly in good light with high shutter speeds. However; I do like to rest the lens on walls, post, hand rails, etc., and while a bean bag, glove, wad of tissues is often used as a rest, something fixed to the tripod collar, such as a firm rubber grip, would better suit my use of the lens.
How about an oversized quick release plate? I use a 4 inch plate on the 50-200 which spreads the load on the palm of your hand and a bean bag. It also means that the zoom ring is clear of the bean bag.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.
Mine hasn't arrived yet, but I was wondering about a small sleeve of wetsuit neoprene, with a T shaped extension, and a couple of bits of velcro to secure it round the vertical part, just below the round collar.

That's one of the reasons I like to use it that way. I want something that is comfortable in the palm of the hands but robust enough to take resting on rough surfaces.

That's a good idea. I'll add it to my prototype tests. Thanks
How about 2 very large rubber washers stuck together with contact adhesive? One with a hole in it to accept the shank of a tripod screw and the other with a hole big enough to surround the recessed head of the tripod screw. For extra comfort in the hand maybe use a grommet for the second washer as this will have a soft flexible edge.

Have a look at the Kirk Super Grip. Does this fit your requirements?
