  • JJC Lens Cap

The other day I was inspecting my old, neglected lenses and decided to have a look at my 50-200 SWD. I removed the lens cap and managed to drop it onto the (carpeted) floor, where it immediately disintegrated. I found the tiny spring and attempted to reassemble it but was unable to do so as it appears that a small piece of plastic has broken off and disappeared.

Although I haven't used the lens for a few years I wanted to get a replacement cap to protect the front element from damage whilst in storage. I discovered that the original part is no longer available anywhere but that various replica caps are available. Eventually I decided on a generic 67mm cap made by JJC, which was available from Amazon. They are available as a twin pack for the princely sum of £6.99, delivered free to my local Amazon locker. I already have a JJC lens hood for my 60mm macro lens, with which I am very happy, so I decided to take a chance on the cap. I placed the order on Friday afternoon and picked the item up on Sunday afternoon. I have to say that, from initial inspection, the quality seems to be at least equal to that of the Olympus original and at £6.99 for a new cap and a spare I can't have any complaints. Here is a link to the item and it appears that they are available in several different sizes, in case anyone is in need of a replacement cap for one of their lenses.

I have replaced both front and rear lens caps on all my lenses. The originals are in the box the lens came in so that If I ever sell one, it comes complete with everything original.
I also have no fears of losing a cap whilst out on a shoot because - 1: it isn't the original and 2: it only cost a pound or two and is easily replaced.

Generic caps are not as problem I have replaced all my originals with generic ones both front and back. What's the problem is those lens hoods. Like the 40-150/2.8, they cost a fortune and the 12-200 I got didn't come with any.

I have replaced several of my lost or dropped lens front caps with JJCs and have been very pleased with their products. I'd even dare to say they seem almost better then the originals; better fit and more robust.

Agreed about JJC products: have bought several over the years without problems. And while - for now - I haven't bought any non-original BLX-1's I did pick up the £12 JJC dual BLX-1 charger which seems to work extremely well and being so petite is an extra bonus when away on trips and trying to minimise kit to pack (I think others have commented positively on this charger too).

I'm happy to use their passive components, but I wouldn't use their charger with only two pins connection to the battery, unless I was desperate to have that charger. I've prepaid for the original (at a discount price, plus $50 to spend for the inconvenience) & now waiting for it to come into stock.

I've decided to order the JJC charger too now as the latest from my supplier for the OMS charger says there is no definite ETA still. It will allow external charging when I need it at least.

I never understand why so many Olympus lenses come without a lens hood.

They started doing that with standard lenses when they brought the mirrorless cameras. Previously kit lenses for their DLSR's had hoods, so I refused to buy Olympus hoods when they didn't supply them & bought JJC ones instead, on principal.
