    Hmmmm....

So looking at LightroomCC it wouldn't run on OSX 10.9, so i decided to bite the bullet and "upgrade" to OSX 10.11.

I now have an iphoto library AND a photos library, both of which are locked folders.

They both reside on an external 500GB disk, along with my music collection.

    So 500MB.

    Which contains:

    Music 147GB
    iPhoto folder 214GB
    Photos folder 207GB
    Spare space 125GB

    693GB total...

    How does this work then?

And when using Lightroom, do you import all the files to a new location and keep or delete the Mac folders?

Which Mac folders do you import into Lightroom?

There isn't enough free space top duplicate everything so next step is to buy a 1TB external HDD so that there is enough storage available....

    Going well so far...

        Re: Lightroom

many keep the lr catalog on the computer hard drive along with the other important running stuff and put photos/docs/music onto an external drive or two or three.

with LR; go in steady with just a few photos and folders to learn the basics of the library. There is a LOT to understand. Firstly; no photo files will be in LR; they will always remain in the hard drive. I would suggest you organize or reorganize your photos/folders onto the new external drive and then important the previews from that h/drive.

make sure your back ups are up to date before you do anything

Also best to have all photo folder/subfolders/photos in one main photo folder as that will make it easier to move the files onto the new h/drive.

When you get organized you might be able to have a 'new photos' folder on the computer hard drive. After editing/posting or whatever you can move the files to the external drive.

This is worth a read http://www.lightroomqueen.com/quickstart/ before doing any thing IMO. Victoria also has a new lightroom book.

Lightroom can be a step re-learning curve however it's pretty hard to break anything. Don't expect to be doing all in a day or so though.

There is lots of info here http://www.lightroomforums.net/forum.php; what the top ones don't know isn't worth knowing

What Wornish said could be right also; it's a bit of a mess atm as they work out new up dates to go back to how it was.

        Good read up time

          Re: Lightroom

I have no issues with LR 6.1.1 stand-alone and OSX 10.11, EL Capitan.

I use a MacBook Pro, not an external drive.

Hope you don't mind, IanB. You put a semi colon at the end of the link. It should read :-
