    Long exposure and Image Stabilisation...

    Hi there,
    I keep reading in magazines and websites that when doing longer exposure images we should turn off image stabilisation. I was wondering why this is recommended? and if it the advice stands for Oly users because Olympus uses in body stabilisation not in lens.
    Any help or advice will be taken on board.

    To be honest, Pete, this is something I have often wondered about too. I remember at one point 'sort of' getting it, but not really.

    I understood that IS wasn't needed and was in fact, best avoided, when using your camera on a tripod for longer exposure shots. What I don't understand is that how can the cameras electronics/mechanics cause an issue i.e. move the camera to cause camera shake when they should be sensing that there is no movement to correct, as it were.

    If the camera is still... the IS system will detect zero movement, and should therefore carry out no corrective action... shouldn't it??

    I am looking forward to finding out and learning about this.

      Slightly relieved to discover that I am not the only one who does not understand the logic behind swiching IS off.

      The advice I have seen repeated is to switch IS off when on a tripod even for normal exposures. As has been said by others the logic is not obvious.

      Probably means I am failing to understand something fairly basic

          Did you ever get around to doing the comparo?
          I thought it might have been because the IS searches for movement and as a result, creates movement that was never there. My suspicions have been confirmed. However I always forget to turn it off for tripod shots. Will have to remember.
