Hello

New to this board but not Olympus cameras or photography.

I'd class myself as an enthusiastic amateur, my aim is just to take as good a shot as I can.

I went from a disc camera (short-lived fad) to an Olympus OM-10 in 1986. After that I got an OM-707, then a Nikon F401.

I then left SLR's behind, using mainly Minolta & Canon 35mm compacts, moving onto Digital Compacts in 1999.

My current SLR (E-450) is my 20th digital camera since then, but only my second DSLR (following a Canon EOS 1000D).

Last year I had an Olympus E-PL1 for fell-walking, as it was light to carry in the hand, and I'm saving up to get a E-PM1 or E-PL3 for this years Summer climbs.

I'm sure I'll find lots of useful information on this forum.

I'm afraid so, it's more of a technology bug, it was the same with mobile phones, now onto my 36th, but only 3 in the last 2 years so I've got it under control.

When technology skips past what I want of a device I'm able to settle on the right one and be happy with it.

Trying to do the same with my cameras. I used to just get the pics printed so my early Nikon and Canon digital compacts did the job, but as I've learned the technology more now and keep pictures electronically so I'm much more of a pixel-peeper as I like to get the best PQ I can for my budget.

I need cameras for different scenarios, I like the small SLR for most things, a micro 4/3rds or other compact system camera for carrying while fell-walking, and a pocketable zoom compact for bird-spotting (currently using a Canon SX130).

As I mentioned I'm saving up but not sure if the PM1 or EPL3 are easy to carry in my hand with a clip-on flash (I use fill-in often). I don't want to knock it off the port if it doesn't fix securely. May have to go to Jessops, see if they'll clip one on for me to try.Or potter onto the relevant board here, see if the regulars know.

It's a little sad I know, but I went off the EPL1 purely because of it's looks, the retro craze isn't so appealing when you almost remember the designs fom the first time around

Let me say I reckon the e-pL1 is the ugliest of all m4/3rds cameras : it isn't even retro! It is very capable though.

I just got delivery of an e-pM1 with the little flash unit, and that thing slides firmly into the hotshoe and port and isn't going to fall off any time soon. Pretty solid. Edit: it has a lock-button too so that's never coming off by accident.
I just tested it. It flashes. Job done. (I almost never use fill-flash anyway)

I'm not going to use the flash thingy, I use a VF-2 all the time.

Apart from landscapes when walking, I take a lot of pictures of my wife. Her nose is of average size, but I still find nose shadow over the mouth a little distracting in a sunny pic. So I use 1 quarter flash at times to lighten the shadows.

So I don't use it as often as I intimated but I like to have it available without having to rummage in my rucksack, while my wife disappears over the next ridge.

So, thanks for the info. I just need to figure out whether it'll be comfortable in my hand, when walking for hours.

Think I'll save up for the PM1 though rather than E-PL3, can't see me needing a tilt screen (although I love the "face-forward" LCDs I've had with the Panny G1 and Canons G12, A80, A630 and A640).

I was hoping to save up for an e-620 but they don't seem to be available any more.

TBH I considered a 25mm pancake for my e-450 to make it lighter for fell-walking but the complaints of CA across the frame, and the photo samples I've studied, put me off.

My wife's nose is tiny, hence me never using fill-flash.
We could perhaps do a poll on the subject and check correlation between nose size and flash use?

Honestly, shadows annoy me on a face, is it just me, or am I just taking them wrong?

Without flash, sometimes the shadow is so strong it looks like she's got teeth missing...she hasn't BTW
