  • Upgrade with new Body looking at om1 mark 2 or wait reset and buy new glass with this era's body

Hi all from where Titanic was built, I am a Oly Glass user and its been near 20 years since the Evolt 510 was released now I have a choice sell or go new and that's why I have joined to get the vibe from other's. Been out of the loop and the new gear will or may not fit with my Glass from the 2007 era. I am due to retire soon so I want to get my Oly gear bought before my means on income expires lol.

Your lenses will all work if you get an adapter but to be honest it is usually best to swap for micro 4/3s ones to take advantage of the lighter weight and newer features. Although it does depend on what glass you have as some of the old lenses are crackers and you would need to spend a lot to replace like for like. Nothing wrong with the E510 btw, that's where I started and I still have it. Loved that old DSLR, rarely use it now though but it's just not worth selling. It took me a long time to realise I didn't need to worry about blowing highlights on the newer cameras though 😄. Oh and welcome to the forum, feel free to ask questions.

Here is a complete list of my Glass
      ED Zuiko Digital 35 - 100mm 1:2
      ED Zuiko Digital 50 - 200mm 1:2.8 - 3.5
      ED Zuiko Digital 7 - 14 mm 1:4
      Fl-50 Electronic Flash
      1.4 x Tele Converter EC-14

I have heard that there is a an adapter but nearly took a heart attack just the price for the going from a Oly to a Micro 4 3rd mount was about £400 its was called the MMF-3 and it is no long made. I am upgrading to a newer Body and looking at the OM1 Mark 2 but wish to get my other upgrades accessory's first, Battery's, battery chargers, tripod etc. Just due to there 2 year cycle upgrade is just around the corner. Learning that Olympus sold out and has become Micro 4 3rds brand name and the new glass has changed etc. Its a good time to upgrade but my worry is i might have buyers regret if I get a om1 mk 2 and a few weeks later a newer better camera body is released.

Thank you for the welcome to the Forums

I went to WeX stores and they sold me a Adapter at the cost of £40, but it come with as no AF on it. I may try the adapter on the om1 mark 2 that's what it can be used on and bite the bullet with out Auto Focus. I will slowly and probably get the body last and then get the new glass, after that and allow the accessories get first to allow time with in this year if a new Body is going to be released It will be a win win for me. Is there any definite information that a newer Micro 4 3rds Camera body is going to be released.

The MMF-3 can still be found (used) like this one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...8I741JNA&psc=1

Described as like new and I would reckon that's a fair price at under £200 inc. postage. I have a very large selection of 4/3 lenses and a MMF-3 myself which I use on MFT.

Having owned and used both the mmf-2 works exactly the same as the mmf-3 and is quite a bit cheaper often found on e.bay cheap . Personally I would keep all your glass if you get an adaptor and just add some MFT ones to fill any gaps in your ranges .
There is another brand of adapter available as well that does work it’s a viltrox one just make sure your buying a new one as the older ones often failed . As with everything ask on here before buying to avoid pitfalls

I have an MMF-3 and the key difference for me compared to the MMF-2 is that it is weather-sealed so you may want to take that into consideration if that is important to you

I did not join until the micro generation, so no advice, I am afraid, but welcome to the friendliest and most knowledgeable forum out there.

Thank you all who have read and replied to me joining the Forum. Do we have persons who have a love of creating 360 degree Panoramas or nearly with there MFT gear. I have allot to relearn and how to use the updated OM-1 Mark 2 coming from a E-510' camera body. Is there any books that I can buy or PDF that give simple instructions step by step with clear and simple diagrams to boot please any information will be gratefully received. And thank you for your time.

To reply to RChammer sir I need the weather proof MMF-3 due to climbing up hills on not so sunny days and still enjoy creating Panoramas plus the new gear will be taken abroad. But thank you for informing me of the Difference between the MMF-2 and MMF-3 being weather sealed.

                  Welcome to the forum!

I also have some legacy Four Thirds lenses, including the 35-100. I find it works well on Micro Four Thirds bodies with the appropriate adapter, especially at full aperture. The aperture mechanism can be a bit chattery if set to below f/2, and you won't get the fast continuous frame rates the more modern bodies are capable of. I love the lens and continue to use it with my OM-1 Mark 1.

It's a similar story for other legacy lenses - great for single shot work, not so great for action photography, or video.

If you haven't tried one yet, the OM-1 Mark II or OM-3 will be an Aladdin's cave of features and performance compared to the very best of Four Thirds. There is some speculation that an OM-1 upgrade is due soon, but nothing is certain. You can look at it this way, any new flagship will be expensive, and the wait will be uncertain. Meanwhile, the OM-1 Mark 2 and OM-3 are here, now and there are bargains to be spotted if you are patient and keep your eyes peeled. The forthcoming Photograpohy Show in Birmingham, next month, is always a good place for bargains, if you can make it there.

Your FL-50 will work just fine on MFT, its compatibility was carried over.

Welcome to the forum. No advice here, sorry, as I came from Canon to OM (first the OM-5, then the OM-3).

                      Hi, Welcome .

Oly may not produce the adapter but I think you can find some in the used market MMF are made by Olympus and DMW-MA1 is by Lumix and Viltrox JY-43F, Fotga M43 AF1, Commlite FT-MFT, and Movo MTM 100.

Just be sure that the body you pick have Phase AF as some of the old lens do not support contrast AF.

Thank you to both Ian and Blu-by-u welcoming me to the forum and I will address both person's with Ian first. Ian I agree with your input on the 35-100mm Lens. God its my best lens and I love it but the results that I got from creating 360 or near pano's with this lens was unmatched at the time but as you mentioned its down size she's a heavy bugger and The aperture mechanism can be a bit chattery lol yeah agreed there sounds like the lens is struggling to take a picture when trying to lock into AF. Single shot yup she oozes quality, action never really given that any consideration and back then it was not that great. But my set up was focused on single shot panorama artist creation. I did purchase an adapter from Wex stores here where I live and bought with a recommendation from the shop personnel advise and help me in this field of transitioning over to a newer camera body and the name that blu-by-u mentioned Viltrox name sounds familiar to what I bought for 40 quid. I do lose the auto focus but for single shot panos I think its worth the money and I will not have buyers remorse if I had bought the wrong adopter.

While I was in Wex camera shop I got to get a look at the display camera sample to handle and seen the newer lens that the new MFT systems has to offer and I went back grabbed my full gear in my back pack and went to wex that same day and compared mounts weight of my lens to the same or better lens to what I had. It was easier for me to be able to handle the newer lens and compared my 35-100mm to the newer lens and body with OM2-mk2. the newer lens is half the weight. Weight is a major factor in me purchasing newer lens due to the new system being brought with me on trips aboard and having it as a carry on case to the plane AND not have it get damage or nicked on the process to the planes cargo hold. Would any one have a idea or recommend a camera back pack that meets recommend carry on case size and is going to be comfortable to carry about and be up into high mountain terrain. I am hoping to get the body first and slowly transition over to new glass where needed.

Blu-by-u thank for that important tip bit on the different AF variations.

Strange that you mention loosing AF on the Viltrox. Do the adapters come with connection terminals? If not you not only loose AF you loose Aperture control as well.

While I drool and dream of that 35-100/2, I am very happy with loosing 1 stop and a lot of the weight. I got that Lumix 35-100/2.8 . (Sorry, Poison talk)

Last year I bought an OM-D E-M1ii to replace a very short lived E-620 for which I had some 4/3 lenses like yours:

ED Zuiko Digital 7-14mm f/4 PRO
ED Zuiko Digital 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD PRO
ED Zuiko Digital 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD PRO
                            ED Zuiko Digital 70-300mm f/4-5.6
                            Zuiko Digital Macro 35mm f/3.5
                            EC-14 x1.4 teleconverter

The adaptor I bought (secondhand) is a Panasonic DMW-MA1, not an Olympus one. Works the same (equivalent to the MMF-2) but cost less than any of the Olympus ones I saw. It isn't weathersealed. Occasionally a lens may show me a black screen when installed on this (bad contacts), but twist off and back on again cures it - it's done me a couple of thousand shots since last summer

The 4/3 Pro lenses all focus noticeably faster on the E-M1ii than they did on the E-620 (even given that the SWD lenses focus quite snappily on Evolte cameras). The E-M1ii is also technically much more capable than the E-620, the OM-1 even more so. TBH the E-M1iii isn't such a major advance over the ii (and I don't think the OM-1 is such a great leap forward either, but I'll stand corrected there), but when I bought my E-M1ii the E-M1iiis I saw were circa £300 more (less now), and the OM-1 considerably more. What I did with that difference in price (plus an extra £50) was buy these:

                            M.Zuiko Digital 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II
                            M.Zuiko Digital macro 60mm f/2.8

The 14-150mm II is weatherproof and I find it to be a nice light carry about lens - much nicer to use than the 14-42/40-150 4/3 kit lenses I previously used (with no lens swapping!), and the 60mm macro (needs an E-M1ii or above to get the most out of it), which I've only had about a month and a half, has turned out to be a brilliant macro lens. So for the price difference between the E-M1ii and E-M1iii I more or less bought my two "walk about" lenses.

This isn't the end, because I'd also like to have a couple or three prime lenses in the future - but I'd also like to have one of the later Pens as a "street camera"... Well maybe next year, given that I am currently besotted with earlier generation Zuiko macro lenses at present...
