  • Olympus 90th anniversary limited edition commemorative space kit

It's been a while since we had a an e-group give-away, so here we go once more.

We have 15 Olympus 90th anniversary limited edition commemorative space kits to give away. We're giving ten to existing e-group members and reserving five to new subscribers between now and the end of August. Fingers crossed, we'll pass the 1,000 member mark during that time!

So what's in the kit? There are two translucent lens caps (67mm and 72mm)and a 90th anniversary embroidered camera strap, supplied in a neat presentation pack:

The kits are not being sold, so this is a unique opportunity to obtain one. The lens caps were designed to for use by Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who used a modified Olympus E-3, Olympus Zuiko Digital 50-200 SWD, and an Olympus Zuiko Digital 11-22, during his International Space Station mission last month. The idea was that if an accident damaged a lens, the partially transparent lens cap would allow inspection of the damage without unnecessarily allowing shards of lens glass to be allowed to escape.

Here are some more images of the kit components:

We're still putting together the means to claim one of these kits via a prize draw, so more details soon.

Could there possibly be a charity auction, for one of the kits?

Sounds like a good idea - do you have a charity in mind?

One thing I didn't mention in the original post is that we can only send these kits to residents in the UK and Ireland. They are provided by Olympus UK. Olympus agents in other countries may well be doing their own 90th anniversary/space initiatives.

OK, I will have a look into this. We haven't done anything like this before, so please bear with us.

I've just edited my profile to include my UK location.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Do the lens caps mean I'll get a picture next time I press the shutter button without taking it off?

Hate to be a 'party pooper' but there are many other worthy charities out there and other UK Children's Hospitals...
So I would suggest that the forum does not align itself to a particular charity...
Maybe one of the winners of an item could use the wanted/for sale section and auction off the item or similar could even be done on EBay or the like
But if I must start the charity wars... how about CLAN

Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth BUT I thought that one of the important tasks of a lens cap was to prevent stray sunlight falling on the sensor /film - and these do not seem to fulfil that fuction

That's the function of the shutter

Sorry, yes of course but I was brought up to believe that a focal plane shutter could be badly damaged by a focussed image of the sun. Also if you are using live view the image may be directly onto the sensor

I suppose that theoretically that's possible, but highly unlikely

In any event, the commemorative ones are translucent and so would diffuse any light.

Besides which, if I won one, it would go nowhere near my camera but be kept safe as a future collectors item, to be sold when I'm old and poor (next week?)
