I suspect it's a daylight shot Photoshopped. I think the stars have been added in - they don't look like any constellations I recognise!

IanC, where/when/how did you take your shot?

The shot was taken on a training walk for the TGO Challenge, an annual self supported coast to coast backpack across the highlands of Scotland which takes place in May. My plan for that day was to walk from Kinlochleven to Glen Nevis via Loch Eilde Mor. In the afternoon, just before crossing over the watershed into Glen Nevis I came across this spot. The river I was walking beside, the Abhainn Rath, split round an island with the majority of the water flowing round the far side leaving wide shallow and smooth water on the side nearest me. The reflections of the mountains, part of the Grey Corries, looked stunning so I took a few shots.



Then I spotted a good campsite a few yards away so I decided to cut my day short and stop here with the hope of getting some shots of the hills at sunset.



By the time sunset came heavy cloud had come over resulting in grey skies and so no sunset pictures. One problem of wild camping during the winter months is that it gets dark so early, this was before the clocks changed, so by 9:00pm I was asleep. I was woken by it getting lighter and lay there thinking my alarm would go off in a few minutes, I had set it in the hope of getting some shots in the dawn light. After 20 minutes the alarm hadn't gone off and it hadn't got any lighter so still half asleep I decided to have a look outside. I pulled my head and shoulders out of my sleeping bag and opened the tent, it was a cold night and ice had formed on the inside of the flysheet, I don't know if you have experienced a shower of ice crystals on the back of your neck but it sure as hell wakes you up. The sky had cleared and the moon was up so I got up to take some shots. My E3 and 12-60mm was mounted on a Slik Mini tripod, this is a tiny but sturdy tripod. I positioned the tripod on a rock on the edge of the water using liveview for framing. I took about 15 shots at different exposure ISO settings and framing. For this shot the exposure was 60 seconds at f2.8 100 ISO. By the time I got back to my tent, about 1am, after about half an hour of shooting I was frozen. So it was back to the tent to make a quick cup of hot chocolate and to bed. I was back up again at 6am, still freezing, for some shots at dawn. Who says I don't suffer for my art.

Jim,

You should check the exif info on the gallery it will show the shot was taken at 00:51. If you take an exposure like this one, 60 seconds f2.8, stars that aren't visible to the naked eye are visible in the shot. The only PP that was done to the shot were an adjustment to levels, noise reduction and straightening.

Looking at the image again I can see the stars are elongated by time exposure. So I now believe the shot is an authentic night one!

A worthy winner , I must say that if my wife had found me taking a shot at that time it may well have been what she needed to get me hospitalised!!
