  • O.K. It's Tonemapped

Found I had to resort to tonemapping to cover the brightness range of this against the light shot at Hatfield Forest yesterday. My aim was to be reasonably subtle so that the image didn't scream "HDR" as soon as you look at it. Have I succeeded?

    No screaming from this viewer.

A very nice shot - but maybe 10 minutes later would have produced an even better one. It's that bite taken by an aggressive troll munching on a sleeping ent that disturbs me, it just keeps drawing my eye.

A good HDR treatment and no shame in 'resorting' to it, the moment we steal a scene by framing it we are introducing artificiality and there is no ranking of mortal against venial post processing. Just pictures.

    Well done

Yes, it looks fine to me. I agree about the troll-bite. Hindight being a wonderful thing, just a step to the right might have mitigated the effects a little without destroying the effect, if you see what I mean.

PS John - I saw your letter in AP! Very good!!

Yup, I can usually spot a halo at 25 pixels - but this looks fine to me. Nice picture..

I like this a lot John - excellent image, and great use of tonemapping. It's given the image a little bit of a magical quality .

Money permitting, this is one piece of software I'd like to get the full working version of next year

I like it too John, but it does seem to me that the sky has lost all its colour? As though a b&w grad filter (if there is such a thing) has been applied from the top downwards. There is colour in the lower half, but not in the top...?

                  Re: O.K. It's Tonemapped

Hmm, now it is mentioned I can see that the "troll bite" rather spoils this picture. On the darkest image it is by no means as severe but the damage has really occurred in the lightest frame. In retrospect this would have been a good reason to use an ND grad filter instead of HDR - or, as has been suggested, to completely hide the sun behind the tree. I wanted to include it for a bit of drama because, as John pointed out, the sky lacked detail and colour (even with underexposure) but it hasn't really worked. As it stands this one won't make it on to my own website but I will try again, especially if we have more snow.

Stephen, you obviously get AP before I do, I only saw it today. Glad you liked the letter.

                  Thanks for all the comments.

you could clone out the troll bite and the one little spot of flare next to it
