In this case I prefer the colour - either version. Possibly because there isn't very much colour and the muted tones suit the dramatic scene.
Walti - you said you and Mrs Walti had different views. The opinion here is heavily in favour of the colour version - which way round was the Walti household?
The subject and the conditions are ideal for B&W, so I'm surprised to find myself going for the colour. I think it's because the muted tones remind me of a hand tinted monochrome print. The effect is delicate and quite lovely.

I’m favouring the colour and Mrs Walti is also starting to prefer it!
I used to go fishing there when I was a lad... my mom knew how successful I had been depending on whether I brought fresh fish or kippers from the smokehouse home for tea

I've done that, bought fresh fish on the way home from a useless fishing trip. she was far to canny to be fooled...
I am going mono but more like this I could have done better from a RAW file
Cheers Alf, I've had a go at the RAW file to bring it towards what you've done... Not very experienced with B&W so had gone in the wrong direction slightly, having seen your results mine are much better now (but still learning!)
I've now got several versions, with/without sepia sky, B&W/colour and so on...
AND
Thanks to everyone else that has commented, I've been trying out all sorts with the photos to try and improve my PP from this - I "think" I've improved a little...
Looks like we might be having a few days at Whitby soon, and it'd be rude not to take the gear. I may well have a go at this composition and perhaps squeeze one other in, thinking a blur hour shot over Staithes. Any other ideas from your visit Paul?

We were only there for an hour or two and carried on to Robin Hood’s Bay later.
there’s lots to look at though and the Abbey looks like it’s worth a look at!
I've just been out on the pier. In very strong winds along with waiting for gaps in the walkers it's a bit difficult though I've tried to shoot it a little differently form yours Paul, I got low down and from further back to get more of the curve, but that doesn't show the tower so well. Looking at the back of the camera it hasn't worked as well as yours though

If you take a series of say 8 shots from the same place say at 20 second intervals you can remove people buy using median stacking.
