  • The Bothy

I've been looking at this photo taken yesterday and am thinking on how to improve it. I think it could be a bit brighter but any other advice or critique welcome.

I will be back here when the morning light is hitting the bothy as I think this will be better and hopefully when there is thicker snow.

    Hi
I recognise that howf in Glen Clunie south of Braemar.
    A nice but cold day.
I would have reduced the foreground as its not that interesting.
The sky is better and more of it with the bothy down on the thirds would work better.
Moving forward and getting that interesting patch of snow in the foreground, having the bothy larger in the picture and counterbalanced with the prominent knoll forming a diagonal across the picture would also help.
Finally as with many snowy pictures, turning it B&W and increasing contrast would work.
I hope you had your thermals on. Its been a lazy, snell wind the last few days.

Yes it was a cold one. I wanted to get closer but the gate on the big fence was padlocked. I suppose I could've switched lens to my 50-200 but I'm not sure that would've worked. My wife knows the gamekeepers on the estate there so I may try and get a key to get access or just ask if it's ok to climb the gate.

I'll go and have a play with it in black and white, although I do like the colour of the bothy.

Here's another shot where I was a bit closer and have converted to B+W.

The black and white shot might have been helped with a bit more space on the right of the building.
Both good images - if you have Lightroom etc. then I might be tempted to add a gradient to the sky and possibly the foreground too on the colour image to make them a bit more dramatic.
I'd be pleased with them both

I've already added a gradient to the sky but didn't want to over process it.

Its a grand view. Not convinced that the B&W is much of an improvement; how about sepia with faded edges?

The snow is not white enough in the colour shot (shot #1). Blue colour cast?
Digicams are designed very well, but the inbuilt light-meters, like all light-meters, are 'grey' meters. From a 'normal' reading I would open 1 1/2 to 2 stops from middle grey.

I did have the exposure comp +1 but you're correct, I don't think that was enough.

Fair enough - you've certainly kept it quite subtle.

Thanks Alf. I think it's definitely one I'll get printed.
