    Re: Diffraction??

    Hi Iain
I agree with Kami. The little circles suggest muck somewhere on the optics.
I'd clean filters, front element of lens and rear element. All with a liquid cleaner as well as cloth.

Completely off subject, you and Steve should consider a visit to Cawdor Old Wood. Superb fungus at the moment.

      Hi there Iain!

I think that the camera pointed upwards is further evidence that the artifact in the image is a reflection - if the lens had been exactly parallel to the brightest point the two images would have been exactly on top of each other, so no effect would be apparent, but because of the angle the light has reflected from the front element onto the back of the filter and then back through the front element again (a similar effect can be observed with high contrast situations viewed through double glazing).

However, in the first image I don't think that the artifact is that obvious to detract from the image, which is great!

Maybe we can all learn from this to remove our filters when shooting close to the sun.

      Cheers,

      Ralph.

Thanks for all the feedback folks, time to clean the kit me thinks! Also take a bit more care while shooting ;-)

It sounds good to me but I'm not sure about Steve
