  • More bending than usual

I don't usually like to manipulate images all that much - most of what I do is documentary to some extent so any bending in post-processing is in the service of rendering the subject as I saw it. But rules are there to be broken....

Back in July I was visiting a friend in southern Spain and was rather taken with a recently abandoned railway line through her town. The only chance I got to prowl with the camera was during the afternoon, the sun was pretty high (and hot!) and the straight photos don't really have much character:

This didn't worry me too much as I planned to give them an antique look to highlight the sense of abandonment, maybe aiming for a look like wet collodion. Then I remembered Silver Efex Pro which came as a freebie with A.N. Other Camera. To my slight surprise a couple of its presets almost gave the look I was after. This one is one of the Film Noir presets:

and this, from a different frame, was Antique Plate:

In a way I feel it is "cheating" to just use somebody else's presets but they are pretty close to how I visualised the end result at the time.

So.... I will be interested to hear your comments. And even better, suggestions for improvement specially from Silver Efex Pro users. Feel free to play with the originals, here is the second one before being antiqued:

The red light in the signal was actually on, but the sun was so bright that the exposure has completely lost it!

    Cheers ... John

    Re: More bending than usual

Well John - I'm at the other end of the spectrum where it comes to bending, so for me the treated photos are my favourites. I think the treatment definitely adds to the air if abandonment. I particularly like the bleached mono one.

    Nice shots!

Thanks Paul. I think the sepia one has quite a tumbleweedy aspect while the darker one is a bit more threatening. I was quite surprised at how easily SFXPro brought them to life, no doubt there is more that can done by tweaking the image after applying the presets.

I agree with Paul. 'bending' images is no different to a painter using different techniques as opposed to recording the scene. It's just that a photgrapher's tools are elctronic as opposed to physical. I like them, as you say because of the light the originals lack a bit of interest; the processing has transformed them.
