Very unusual for me, I have tried my hand at a B&W image. All comments will be appreciated.

Hi very interesting image, I do like black and white, this is very good giving the conditions I have been in these auction houses and the light is not the best at times, I wonder if lifting the whites a little just to give a little lift as on my screen it does seem lacking of any white.

This is my opinion, I think I have looked at to many past masters like Ansel Adams, He is a kind of Idol of mine in the black and white field of photography, I keep trying not got close to his as yet, maybe some day Ha.

Keep going with black and white, a spectacular black and white does beat a good colour, this is me saying that.

      Dave,

Thanks for your comment. I agree that the whites are a little dull. I guess the histogram should be from somewhere near 0 to somewhere near 255.

      I had another go here:

      Is this better?

        Re: Bull Run

It's a nice story shot. That mod certainly brings it to life a bit more, and I like the overall dark atmosphere. The thing that troubles me is the very dark area on the left side of the bull (our left, his right). Is there any detail there that you can pull out of the shadows?

          John.

If you mean the dark area to the left of the worried looking bloke with the stick, There was not much of interest there. I gave it all some drama adding a vignette in LR. Maybe I was a bit heavy handed, but I think not.

          Here is the OOC jpeg:

            Peter,

John means the dark area on the left side of the bull itself. It would be nice if a little more detail could be coaxed from this area, even if it is just in the face. Nevertheless, it's a fine picture with great atmosphere taken in very difficult light.

BTW, I'd want more than a thin stick to wave if I was going in the ring with that bull!

              John,

I see what you mean, I will have a go it tomorrow and then upload my next version..

I spent an hour or more there and watched maybe 20 bulls come through. Several different people took on the task of steering them round and round the ring while the bidding was in progress and then out through the gate behind the bull in my picture. They were very adept at doing this although very sensibly wary. The piece of fence that the man is holding (in front of the auctioneer) is set about 2ft. out from the one behind to provide a safe refuge. There are several of these around the ring.

This particular bull was the most impressive, black all over and showing off bellowing and dancing around - hence the wary look by the handler...

I was hoping to get the whole ring full of sheep, but they were sold before I got there. Still the bulls were good fun - I will certainly go again...

Spot-on on both counts John. I like the way the vignette focusses the attention on what is going on in the ring.

I have tried to increase detail in the bull, hopefully without losing the atmosphere.

                    Re: Bull Run

I also think it is a good story telling image Peter.

Perhaps something like this would suit it or perhaps not.

Sorry about the quality but editing with only one good eye takes a bit of getting used to.

                    Regards Paul.

                      Paul,

I have seen this kind of effect before, not sure if I like it or not, but in any case I have no idea how to do it.

Could you please give me a quick run down on how to do it?

Sorry you are having to work with one eye, I hope this is only temporary...

Nope. I think your first offering is the best, I've just seen it now.

                            Ulfric,

Thanks for that, looking back, it does not look too bad.

The second version shows more detail in the bull, but I think the first (and darker) version has a bit more "menace" about it.

Just trying these different ideas has taught me a lot, must find another suitable image to give the B&W treatment.

I agree with you, the first one has more atmosphere and menace about it. Much prefer it to the other versions.
