  • After Dark

Last month I finally managed to get a very late summer holiday and got a chance to try some night time photography. There was no moon, very little light pollution and hardly any clouds.

This photo of the Milky Way is a 27 second exposure at ISO1600 with no in camera noise reduction. I took a dark frame immediately afterwards and used it to clean up some of the noise. Is there any camera which would take a noiseless photo at ISO1600 for 27 seconds?

This is the trout fishing loch near the cottage we were staying at. It is an 8 minute exposure at ISO 200 and the in camera noise reduction was on.

    What do you think?

Two very inspiring shots. Would the first one have been better using ISO 800 and doubling the exposure time? Must have a go at star trails myself sometime. Too much light pollution where I live for the Milky Way.

Two very nice images, both are good in there own right. Ilike how the star trails are reflecting in the water. Something I must try one day.

            Ditto

Great shots Chris, they might inspire me to get out with the camera at night.

John - I think doubling exposure to nearly a minute would introduce significant trailing in the stars. No problem if that's what you want, but I don't think it's what Chris was after for the Milky Way pic.

                Which is wonderful, Chris.

                Ciao ... John
