  • Snowdonia with church Black and White

Hi Another image from our trip to Snowdonia, found this on our way back from Anglesea along the scenic route, and did a black and white of it, taken with the E30 14mm lens. Would welcome any critique good or bad. Trying to get into Black and White, I used to back in the film days.

Alot of Fiddling in Photoshop as the black and white conversion just doesn't create the true feel of monochrome, and a mine field of plugins available not quite got the right effect.

Not sure I'm convinced by this conversion. Something strange seems to be happenning with the sky, it's almost as if the top quarter of the picture has lost everything fom the blue channel, whilst the lower clouds seem to have lost their texture in places.

I tend to do conversions (which is pretty rarely nowadays) by seperating into 3 coloured layers (R G B) and then fiddling with modes to combine them back into an image. But unless the light is doing something really interesting then I mostly prefer colour.

Maybe if you post the colour original we could all have a play and compare results.

I really like the composition, which is quite timeless, and creates a powerful visual connection between God and the beauty of His creation.

However, I agree with the others about the B&W conversion. The mountains and chapel have converted well in my view, but the sky has gone wrong. It looks as if you have used a strong red filter, but it spoils the effect.

Please can we see the colour original?

Here is the colour version, you can try a mono of it to see how you might think it would be improved as a mono.

Well - I've given it a try, but I much prefer the colour version which is a nice shot.

Channel Mixer in The GIMP, signifigant push to blue channels and quite a push on green, photo set to preserve luminosity. Then quite a twist to the bottom half of the curves. Slight blur to the sky as the relatively small reproduction didn't take kindly to rough treatment.

I like the colour version, but the high clouds seem to have a notcable magenta tint, which I think is spoiling the B&W conversion.

I will have a play in PS and see how it comes out.
