  • Low light quality

First holiday abroad for 8 years – Ischia, an island in the Bay of Naples. This is a view from our hotel of the Castello Aragonese in the early evening light with a partially cloudy sky.
No tripod with me and so balanced the OM-1ii with 12-100m lens on the thin upper edge of the glass balcony and trusted that the lens and body stabilisation would compensate for any movement that I made. 400 ISO 12mm 1.5 secs f6.7
I wanted to get the light from the lighthouse (next to the castle tower) shining out as well as the flood lit castle. Other attempts were closer up but I prefer the more panoramic shot as it includes the typical vegetation and buildings in the area. P’raps it’s just a nice photo of a nice holiday. A basic record shot.

The RAW file was processed with DX0 PureRaw4 and was 62Mb and 5184 x 3888 pixels. I'm happy with the low light quality!

Interesting - as an aside, I am researching a short holiday to the Naples area as it's Julia's 60th early next January, and she is very keen to explore the Pompeii ruins. Are you planning to visit Pompeii?

No. We're back. Ischia is an island and it was near the end of the season and so we just chilled as TUI didn't offer any sensible options re such a tour for us. Will be going back sometime to do Pompeii etc. Tis exceptionally crowded in the high season apparently though!

I was told that much of the Amalfi coast shuts down over the winter so in early January it shouldn't be crowded.

I have been to the Pompei ruins and they are OK but don't expect too much, they have not been looked after very well imho.
The Amalfi cost though is spectacular, don't even think about driving its a bit scary.
Lots of interesting hotels, restaurants, oh and scenery.

I went to the Amalfi coast, staying in Naples, on a press trip back in 2018, and we spent half a day at Pompeii. But of course I had to arrange nothing, so it was very straightforward. I've driven in Italy before and it was OK, but I think we'd take a tour via bus this time. A friend of mine who used to live in Rome has suggested staying there and taking the train to Naples.

The last abroad holiday we had was to see Pompeii and Herculaneum. It's a few years ago now pre COVID. We stayed in a hotel on the hills outside Naples with a lovely view over the bay and not too bad for connecting trains to get to the city and sites. It was early season so crowds weren't a problem and it wasn't too hot just nice. We were completely blown away with both sites and have been watching many TV programmes since. I think it is an amazing place. Really want to go back and add in the Amalfi coast too this time. I'm sure you will really enjoy your holiday Ian.
