We turned the East end of South Georgia and headed Southwest into the Scotia sea.
The names hereabouts were applied by the Scottish Antarctic Expedition of 1902-1904 led by Sir William Spiers Bruce.
Overshadowed by Scott and Shackleton and shunned by the head of the Royal Geographical Society, it nevertheless did a lot of serious scientific research including setting up the first permanent weather station in the far South and its still in operation today.
The only South polar expedition never to be awarded the polar medal.
Two days at sea, fairly quiet, dull, occasionally snowing.
Two lectures a day if you wanted.

A bit lightly clad for the weather

The icebergs were suffering.

The light was constantly changing. Yes it was pink.

Eventually land appeared, the South Orkneys

More bird life, a not very good shot of a Sooty Albatross

Chinstrap Penguins (in flight)

A flock of Snow Petrels

At last the South Orkneys and we were headed in to land.

It looked more bleak than South Georgia

So what was there to see?
