a vole and a mole both made it to shore without being eaten .. it you have never seen the high spring tide come in it races across the estuary and submerges the marsh really fast a matter of minutes and land becomes sea.. I had trouble with this series of shots as at times they were within my minimum focus distance

That's really interesting - especially seeing the mole there - have you seen them before there?
Is that a water vole? I thought they were normally found only near freshwater? Tidal areas must be quite brackish?

all sorts on the marsh Ian I have seen hares, foxes, voles ,moles ,shrews ,harvest mice etc .its a vast marsh around 15 miles long by 4 miles wide and only floods like this a couple of times a year when the tide /wind /and air pressure are all favourable so 99% of the time its dry land and as its a major river estuary your correct in the brackish assumption . lots of things get preyed upon or drowned including the photos I saw last night of two carsOriginally posted by Ian View PostThat's really interesting - especially seeing the mole there - have you seen them before there?

The Mole shot is a fantastic capture: I've never seen anything like it before! One to send to BBC Wildlife?
Most of the moles that live on our marshes in summer "migrate" through our garden and up to the higher land behind us each autumn, returning in the spring as the water levels change during the winter. Given how wet it has been/still is there are vey few active moles left on the marshes except in the few slightly higher areas which must just be dry enough for them.
