Looks hairy rather than prickly? I guess there re various types?

not the first time folks have been surprised to see fur on a porcupine.
i'd guess they have a fur coat for warmth added with the protective layer of quills. i don't know that the porcupine's physical features vary from one side of the continent to the other.
