I’m always amazed by what a Heron can catch, swallow down and even fly with! It had a Tench I think? It landed in the reeds nearby and swallowed it down in short order.
Brilliant capture Bill. Were you tracking the Heron for the shot?
Thanks. Yes the bokeh is pretty horrible with reeds close behind and possibly some heat haze contributing. It was the 150-400mm with MC-14 at 700mm. I did use bird tracking. I’d been photographing a Bittern in the reeds nearby and saw this Heron coming in. At first it looked a bit odd to the eye like it had a radio backpack (not a thing you expect for a heron though!) but I managed to “BIF” it with the bird subject tracking and saw it had that fish. I might redo the shot with a mask to blur the background a bit and also take a look at some other shots in the sequence. It was a pretty good day out at RSPB Minsmere Suffolk with 10 Spoonbills close to one of the other hides. Very hot though so maddening heat haze, the pixel bin will be full of discarded shots!
