We lucked out walking the coast path near Holme-Next-the-Sea in North Norfolk last week when I spotted this Barn Owl perched on a post. We watched it flying between posts diving down trying to catch things - none of these attempts seemed to be successful!
These are a few of the better shots. The last and closest of the flight shots it was too far left in the frame (forgot to pan and zoom out!) so I cropped it in a fair bit.
Barn Owls I find are often a tricky trade-off between shutter speed and ISO at the end of the day near dusk. I tend to take a low shutter speed up to maybe 1/800s max when the light is poor (which it was). Also if there is no time to spot meter the exposure and lock it, the evaluative metering tends to blow out the detail on the owl with the bird over-exposed due to darker backgrounds so for some of these I dialled in -1EV and then raised the exposure level in post processing. I ran these through DxO PureRaw v4 with DeepPrimeXD2 then did further PP in CaptureOnePro.
I wish there were more reliable barn owls around near my home base to practice the technique!
