Usual excellent shots. Just coming to the end of my 2 weeks in Ottawa so may put up some of my warbler shots once I get home (I only have access to my sisters steam-powered laptop and no PP software so only tweeted the odd Google-cropped JPEG so far!).

we've just had three very rare birds in the past week...a Black-throated Grey warbler, a Red-headed woodpecker, and a Golden-crowned sparrow (the last two [juvenile plumages] are still here). I wonder what rare stuff you are going to find.

Nothing very rare this year (I found a Long-tailed Jaeger on my 1st day here in 2019 & Ottawa's 1st ever Tropical Kingbird on my final day last year). Meanwhile as I struggle to find warblers to photograph here, the UK (and Wales in particular) have been "deluged" with North American birds driven over the Atlantic by the remnants of hurricane Lee. I know some people who saw Bay Breasted, Magnolia & Canada Warblers on Saturday - none of which had been seen in the British Isles more than twice previously! Just to wind me up my wife drove across country on Thursday night to see the Magnolia Warbler and as I type is going back hoping for the Canada Warbler! Madness!

that is something
it's been a very strange birding year in 2023. i've heard myself numeorus times saying that it's been way too quiet generally...and in some areas i've been going to for years...just dead all spring/summer. i got a lot of pics this year but i spent a lot more time/travel to get them.
-i've seen plenty enough of Buteo hawks throughout the late summer but it's when the combines and swathers are in the fields when we really (should) see great numbers.
so far this fall...nothing.
just today i took a drive through the rurals and I saw 7or 8 separate fields being harvested. not a one hawk or even a Raven/Crow following behind the machines to pick up the scrambling mice. really strange. i've heard other birders say the same about the hawks this fall. i suspect all the forest fires, burning since march and pushing smoke accross western canada, might have something to do with it.
last year I got many different types (dark/medium/light morphs and dark/medium/light morph Harlans) of Red-tailed and Swainson's hawks at harvest time.

Thanks.Originally posted by blackfox View PostSuper set again paul ,can’t seem to get near small birds here at the moment
It’s a roll of the dice here too.
sometimes they come in close for quick look or a good long look .
the orange- crowned landed less than a meter above my head and sat for 4 seconds. I had to take a good step back to focus on it. all luck.
